About this listen
The Northumbrians have been overlooked by British and global history, but they’ve made astonishing contributions to both. Dan Jackson sets out to recover this lost history, exploring the deep roots of Northumbrian culture - hard work and heavy drinking, sociability and sentimentality, militarism and masculinity - through centuries of border warfare and dangerous industry. He explains what we can learn about Northumbria’s people from its landscape and architecture and revisits the Northumbrian Enlightenment that gave the world the locomotive and the lightbulb. This story reaches right to the present day, as this extraordinary region finds itself caught between an indifferent south and an increasingly confident Scotland.
From the Venerable Bede and the prince-bishops of Durham to Viz and Geordie Shore, this vital new history reveals a part of England with an uncertain future, but whose people remain as remarkable as ever.

"The best works of local history exert a fascination that transcends the merely local, and The Northumbrians is definitely one of the best." (The Sunday Times)

Resonated very much with me as a Northumbrian
This is very comprehensive and well written. Covers all aspectd I can think of about Northumbrian life.
I liked the emphasis on North Eastern communitarian culture and working class traditionalism and small-c conservatism. It resonated very much with me, being a woman in my twenties who was raised on a geordie ex-mining town council estate and still lives in one. Dr Dan Jones seems well in touch with this and I am pleased it wasn't ignored as I expect it would be to the convenience of many modern and biased liberal writers and activists who prefer to misrepresent us.

A must read for northerners and history lovers
Absolutely fascinating from start to finish. Now have to resist reeling off facts from this book at every opportunity. If you’re from the North East, read this book now!!! If you’re not from the North East…still read this book now.

A nice history of the North East
As someone who was born and brought up in the North East until I moved on in my thirties this was a wonderful historic and nostalgic trip back to that area lots of insights and facts to entertain although Dan Jackson the author and narrator of the book knows an awful lot of get big words for a Geordie lad

Good in-depth understanding of the North-East
I liked Dan Jackson on the rest is history so bought the audible book. I feel I understand the North east better. It is where my wife is from so helps me to understand some things about her family a bit better.
I liked Dan Jackson’s narration m. However, I found the structure of the book chaotic, jumping from one topic to the rest.. something … friendly people… something… friendly people etc

Fascinating!
As a foreigner who moved from London to Northumberland in early 2023, I loved learning about the history and the people of this place.
This book contains so much information and so many great stories, I feel like I’ve really gotten to know Northumbria. I have also received answers to many of my questions along the way 😊
