About this listen
The Bestselling Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Soon to be a major motion picture, Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale has captured the hearts of millions of readers becoming a number one bestseller across the world. It is a heart-breakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the endurance of women.
This story is about what it was like to be a woman during World War II, when women’s stories were all too often forgotten or overlooked . . . Vianne and Isabelle Mauriac are two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals and passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path towards survival, love and freedom in war-torn France.
It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.
‘A rich, compelling novel of love, sacrifice and survival’ – Kate Morton, author of Homecoming
‘Movingly written and plotted with the heartless skill of a Greek tragedy, you’ll keep turning the pages until the last racking sob’ – Daily Mail
‘I loved The Nightingale . . . great characters, great plots, great emotions, who could ask for more in a novel?’ – Isabel Allende, bestselling author of The House of the Spirits
‘A griping tale of family, love, grief and forgiveness’ – Sunday Express
The Nightingale has sold more than 4 million copies globally, TIME, February 2021

Heartbreaking but addictive
I just could not wait to hear more and more of this tale.
The writing led me into a deep understanding of the characters.
Honestly the perfect book for me.

Excellent Story
The story was interesting and stimulating even if not always factually correct. It presented a real drama that was captivating.
At first, I was irritated by the American narrator, I thought this was a mistake (and perhaps still do?), it presented a disconnect with all of the characters early years in France. I began to ignore it as I became more intrigued by the story.
It might be better with two narrators one French and one American.

Brilliantly crafted
The story kept me utterly transfixed, both with its ability to fully depict the atmosphere of war time but also the engaging way it describes the conflict and confusion in people, to save your own skin or to overcome very natural fear and grow into a hero who will try everything to help save suffering humanity. It has left me very humble!
Very well read, too! Found myself imagining that I was there! Read it more or less in one sitting, this novel has given me a memorable weekend! Thank you.

Harrowing, Heroic and Heart - Breaking
This is a searingly powerful female perspective on the descent from peacetime life in France into occupied Nazi hell. The story's main focus is on love and family during a time of unspeakable brutality. The heroism and sacrifice of the protagonists in the face of such cruelty is extraordinarily compelling and moving. I struggled with aspects of the narration and flitted between the book and the audio, finally settling into the audio. This book got better and better as it went on and, although 'enjoyment' is probably not the right word, I found this an utterly engrossing listen.

A beautiful, powerful story.
In the first stages of this book I wondered if it would be the same as many, many other good stories about people in the Second World War. I’m so pleased I stuck with it because this story delivers above and beyond. The audiobook narrator is so talented at bringing each character to life.

Gripping read
I enjoyed every minute of The Nightingale. A wonderful story, heartbreaking at times, the terror and suffering of war and the courage of ordinary people to survive. Isabelle & Vien will stay with me for a long time. Narration was excellent. I didn’t want this one to ever end.

Simply Brilliant !
A brilliant story and a testament to the power of the human spirit and the ability humans have and demonstrate during their darkest hours.
The story of two very different sisters and the lives they lead throughout the war, both depicting their characters individually , however eternally entwined by family bonds .
I felt I lived through their experiences with them, superbly written, a book that will stay with me & one I feel I learnt a lot from .
