Summary

‘Vivid and compelling’ Rosamund Lupton, bestselling author of Three Hours

A house stands alone in the woods.

Deep in the forests of Norway, Lexi finds a fresh start with Tom and his two young daughters, working as their new nanny.

The darkness creeps closer.

But Lexi is telling lies, and she’s not the only one. This family has a history – and this place has a past. Something was destroyed to build this house, and in the dark, dark woods, a menacing presence lurks.

Lexi must protect the children in her care – but protect them from what?

Atmospheric, gothic, spine-chilling, the new thriller from C.J Cooke will haunt you long after you turn the last page . . .

atmospheric masterpiece

I found the pacing to be fantastic. It's a main character you want to root for, and the story is rich in description and atmosphere. The narration was great, with the range of accents adding quality.

Eerily beautiful

This book is absorbing and intriguing. The author creates a setting that I never want to leave, despite the haunting tales. It’s easy to listen to and well performed. The characters are interesting the the storyline kept me guessing until near the end. While it has wonderfully spooky and supernatural elements, it really seems to be about people and the connections they make to both the world and other people. After this book and The Lighthouse Witches, I have a new favourite author.

Ticking all the Gothic tropes

I have always loved Gothic literature, and this novel ticks all the usual Gothic tropes. I love the addition of a modern realism, with mentions of Google, and other modern day stuff, and does contrast with the surreal gothic atmosphere. The writing is visual and cinematic, and you feel like you're watching one of these Netflix series. I find the scenes skilfully laid out. It is a tightly edited page turner without any 'fluff'.

I only have 2 complaints, one is that I find the main character, Lexi, unconvincing. She is purportedly from a low income background, going in and out of foster homes. There is no mention of her doing exceptionally well academically. And yet her general knowledge and vocabulary, mannerisms, seem more fitting for a more middle class, and well educated person.

The other complaint is that the plot could have been tighter. There are quite a lot of loose ends, as if the book is expecting a sequel. But then again, Gothic novels are normally vague like that.

I thought the narrator was exceptional!

I thought the narrator was exceptional. I loved the supernatural approach to the devastation of the land. Good story although with a few unexplained sub plots.
I was puzzled why the women were killed by the nük. It was the two men who were desecrating almost everything they touched, yet they got away Scott free!! Also, there was no explanation regarding the body they found: they just covered it in cement and it was forgotten about.
Well worth the listen!

Unusual

Haunting ghostly tale. Quite sad to be honest. But enjoyable with it. Nice to hear a local to me accent and areas where I’m from mentioned.
Narrator was very good.

Brilliant and terrifying.

This was a very different tale in so many ways.. My chosen medium was audio book, and the story had me gasping in fear and crying over two wonderful little girls and sobbing for the story teller in the book. As for the narrator Aysha Kala, she brought each character to life for me; Lexi/Chloe, the other adults, and the children who play such an important part in the book. I didn’t know want it to end but I couldn’t stop listening! So, a brilliant book from C. J. Cooke, whose work I’ve never come across before but whose books I will definitely be reading more of. But the icing on the cake and what really made it for me was Aysha’s narration. My next task is finding another book read by her! 10 stars at least!
