About this listen

A short story from The Most Beautiful Woman in Town & Other Stories

"Cass was the youngest and most beautiful of 5 sisters. Cass was the most beautiful girl in town. 1/2 Indian with a supple and strange body, a snake-like and fiery body with eyes to go with it. Cass was fluid moving fire. She was like a spirit stuck into a form that would not hold her. Her hair was black and long and silken and whirled about as did her body. Her spirit was either very high or very low. There was no in between for Cass. Some said she was crazy. The dull ones said that. The dull ones would never understand Cass. To the men she was simply a sex machine and they didn't care whether she was crazy or not."

Bukowski's alter ego finds himself in a slow dance with the most beautiful girl in town, who also happens to be its saddest; a tale of loss and what might have been.

OBIE winner Will Patton (Remember the Titans, The Good Wife, Armageddon) recreates Bukowski in his visceral prime, along with every eye-popping character in his life, each adversary, lover, and stranger in a lost city.

Good listen

First story I’ve listened to from Charles Bukowski, I can see why people appreciate his work

Bad Vibes

I somehow have gone my whole life not knowing anything about Bukowski, before picking this up from the Audible Included library. Made it part way into the this story and was getting weird vibes, so I did a bit of a look into him and his writing and I'm no longer interested in anything this guy had to say. For me, good prose and some powerful poetry don't excuse being a creep and exuding that in your work.

Not telling or judging anyone who has a different perspective, but I'll never manage to read every author and book I want to before I die, so it's a very simple thing for me to cut the bigots and chauvinists that I'm aware of from my reading pool.

If you decide to check out the short story collection named after this one, huge content warnings for sexual assault, paedophilia, and more.
