Summary
Newlyweds Alice and Jake are a picture-perfect couple. Alice, once a singer in a well-known rock band, is now a successful lawyer. Jake is a partner in an up-and-coming psychology practice. Their life together holds endless possibilities. After receiving an enticing wedding gift from one of Alice's prominent clients, they decide to join an exclusive and mysterious group known only as the Pact.
The goal of the Pact seems simple: to keep marriages happy and intact. And most of its rules make sense: Always answer the phone when your spouse calls. Exchange thoughtful gifts monthly. Plan a trip together once per quarter. Never mention the Pact to anyone. Alice and Jake are initially seduced by the glamorous parties, the sense of community, their widening social circle of like-minded couples. And then one of them breaks the rules. The young lovers are about to discover that for adherents to the Pact, membership, like marriage, is for life. And the Pact will go to any lengths to enforce that rule. For Jake and Alice, the marriage of their dreams is about to become their worst nightmare.

Interesting story if a little incredible!
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was an interesting premise. My only reason for deducting a star is that I found it a bit silly to believe that a practising therapist wouldn't recognise a massive tubthumping cult when it walloped him in the face; and that his hotshot lawyer missus would blithely sign the hundred page contract without giving the small print the once over.
If you can suspend your disbelief past these minor plot points, it's a great listen (although the narrator needs to forget his dreams of ever visiting Ireland North or South as there's a warrant out for crimes against their language).

original storyline
I enjoyed the unusual storyline and the narrator did a good job portraying the characters. Parts of the story were beyond belief but I still enjoyed it.

Enjoyable-disappointing ending
A different, interesting, page turning surreal read. I hope the end means there is a sequel.

A bit silly at the end
Started a bit slow and was good in the middle but the end was ridiculous. I didn't understand what happened with Joanne and why the cult became sadistic. The end was rushed and far fetched and it seems the main characters were left to a miserable demise in any case. A bit silly and only finished it out of curiosity and to hope it all made sense.
The narrator was good though but he did sometimes forget to continue with the accent he gave each character.

Silly but very compelling read
A rather far fetched story but a real page turner. A tad king but I enjoyed it.

Gripping listen weak ending
I was gripped until around chapter 85 when unfortunately it felt like the author had run out of ideas where to take an otherwise well constructed plot. Sadly the ending was lazy, in a novel that constantly, cleverly hovers on the edge of reason, the last few chapters lurched into incredulity. Shame.
