Summary

There’s a stalker on the loose at the mall - and there’s no safe place to hide.

Working at the mall is supposed to be fun. Trish’s job at Muffin-Mania is hardly intellectually challenging and her boss is a piece of work, but it’s worth it to have a job in the same building as her two best friends, the Hanson twins. And the hot guys who hang out there are an added bonus. But something isn’t right about this mall.

It’s the oldest mall in the state, remodeled over a dozen times without rhyme or reason, and there are many strange nooks and secret passages behind the bright gleaming storefronts. Someone has been stealing housewares, furniture, and food, and now a mysterious man with ash-gray hair and a whisper-soft voice has started harassing Trish on the phone. He knows her secrets, and he has dark plans for her.

Editor reviews

Trish works at a muffin shop at the mall, and things are going great: her best friends work in the same building and the hot guy at the pizza counter can't seem to take his eyes off her. But soon, a creepy customer keeps showing up to harass her, and Trish discovers a dead body in the dumpster. Terrible things are happening at the mall, and it looks like Trish is the next victim. The recipient of multiple Earphone Awards, narrator Tara Sands superbly brings out the mystery and menace of this thriller, creating a feeling of horror and suspense with her intelligent grasp of character and pacing.

Creepy how scary a mall can be

So glad I found this reminds me of lost summer days reading my point horror books. Between this and Doctor Who I will never look at a mannequin the same again.

it's a Point Horror. it what you expect

The usual 80s affair and weird pop culture references that didn't understand when you were kid reading this in the 00s. Beware the Muffman.

Terrifying, but not the way you'd want

It is rare I leave a bad review but this story... I suggest maybe you should avoid it? Some of her other stories are much better. Maybe go listen to Fatal Secrets instead?

I always love Tara Sands' narration style but it could not save this book.

SPOLIERS: So the love interest was... well, deeply creepy and upsetting but I attributed that to his youth and inexperience dealing with stressful situations. Only for the big twist ending to be: he is an adult, a police officer AND a manipulative creep. And yet, he's a good guy? Yuck.
