About this listen
Whether it is pastoral care for the bereaved, discussions about the afterlife or being called out to perform the last rites, death is part of the Reverend Richard Coles' life and work. But when his partner, the Reverend David Coles, died, shortly before Christmas in 2019, much about death took Coles by surprise. For one thing, David's death at the early age of 43 was unexpected.
The man that so often assists others to examine life's moral questions now found himself in need of help. He began to look to others for guidance to steer him through his grief. The flock was leading the shepherd. Much about grief surprised him: the volume of 'sadmin' you have to do when someone dies, how much harder it is travelling for work alone, even the pain of typing a text message to your partner - then realising you are alone.
The Reverend Richard Coles's deeply personal account of life after grief will resonate, unforgettably, with anyone who has lost a loved one.

Rev Richard Coles is a bright and eloquent man with a lovely sense of humour. He deals with the death of David who was the love of his life in a sensitive and respectful way with love and loss hand in hand. I laughed and cried in equal measures.

Challenging, heart rending and comforting
Being in the midst of grief I was uncertain about reading this book but I found it helpful - I am not alone in this world of madness. It was read by Richard Coles whose voice and tone has a calming and comforting effect. Sad but not self pitying. Realist but not frightening. In one word- comforting.

I will read this book many times.
Such a beautiful book. It has helped me to reason out some of my feelings after losing loved ones. Read in a way by Richard that no one else could have done. Thank you.

Lovingly narrated and very sad on equal amounts. This will resonate with those who are bereaved, especially those who have lost their life partner!

An important listen
Beautiful, raw, heartbreaking and hopeful. Grief is a tricky beast and books like this help us unpack it all. I'm grateful for the reverend for sharing his truth.

The Title delivers
Absolutely lovely. I'm a huge fan of Rev Coles and after listening, still am, if not more so. I found it humbling to hear about grief and loss from the perception of a religious leader, especially one who is openly gay and unapologetic about his orientation and his marriage to another man.
There were times where his narration seemed to veer into details and anecdotes that didn't really matter to the story at hand, but I realized that such is the point of the story: death, loss, grief and despair make us think about and do weird stuff, and its all just part of the process.
Lovely book. I recommend to all.

A love poem
This is the most beautiful love poem I've ever read. It is a song to love of a partner, love of nature, love of dogs, love of God and love of love.
There were parts of the book which almost broke me but do not be put off because the wit and warmth are wonderfully uplifting. As you would expect from surely one of the kindest people on earth, Richard Coles is a generous, thoughtful writer, who is as kind to his readers as he is to everyone.
This is a story which needed to be told and a book which needs to be read.
