Summary
Against the backdrop of WWII-ravaged Italy comes a powerful and emotional novel of love, survival, justice, and second chances by the bestselling author of White Rose, Black Forest.
Occupied Italy, 1944. In the mountain regions south of Bologna, Liliana Nicoletti’s family finds escaped POW James Foley behind German lines. Committed to the anti-Fascist cause, they deliver him to a powerful band of local partisans. But when the SS launches a brutal attack against the Resistance, Liliana’s peaceful community is destroyed. Alone and thrown together by tragedy, James and Liliana fight together as Monte Sole burns. Forging an unbreakable bond, they know their only hope of survival is to make it to the Allied lines.
Twelve years later, fate reunites Liliana, newly widowed, and James, now a journalist for a New York magazine. Liliana reveals to him the obsession that has haunted her since the massacre at Monte Sole: finding and bringing to justice the SS officer who ordered her family killed. James has a revelation too. He might know how to hunt the man down. Joining forces once more, and increasingly drawn to each other, Liliana and James discover new levels of conspiracy on a journey that leads them to Argentina - and to a choice that will change their lives forever.

Moving and Mesmerising
This novel was both a moving and mesmerising read. The narrators made you feel you were there. The author’s description of the time and places he described were captivating. Although sometimes graphic, I felt it captured vividly what we all know probably would have taken place during the invasion by the nazis. I felt taken back in time. It was sometimes emotional but a very accurate and enjoyable read. Would highly recommend this book.

Gripping story with engaging characters and historical insights
Some slightly questionable accents at times but I enjoyed the narrative and the resolution of the plot over the lifetimes of the main characters

Captivating and thought provoking
Captivating story based in real events. A different look at the atrocities of ww2 in Italy. Brings into sharp relief the part played by the Catholic Church in helping Nazi criminals escape justice.

Totally spoiled by the female narrator.
I was looking forward to this book, and I really like Will Damron as a narrator. However the female narration was utterly awful. So much so that I simply couldn't continue with the book. I am really annoyed that I spent £8 on this rubbish. I did listen to the sample, which was less than 2 minutes and narrated by Will Damron, so I feel particularly mislead as I had no idea the female narrator would be so dreadful. Would not recommend and I will certainly avoid this female narrator in the future.
