Summary

The Long Night is Ernst Israel Bornstein's first-hand account of what he witnessed in seven concentration camps. Written with remarkable insight and raw emotion, The Long Night paints a portrait of human psychology in the darkest of times. Bornstein tells the stories of those who did all they could do to withstand physical and psychological torture, starvation, and sickness, and openly describes those who were forced to inflict suffering on others. The narrative is simple, yet profound; unbridled, honest, and dignified. The Long Night is the extraordinary tale of Ernst Israel Bornstein's tortuous passage through a number of Nazi camps. What he endured reminds us that there were many different experiences of the camps and that there is no single Holocaust narrative. Most of the camps to which Dr Bornstein was sent remain little known today, yet they remind us of just how widespread, vast and destructive the brutal camp system was.

With introduction from former Prime Minister, David Cameron.

Critic reviews

"Ernst Israel Bornstein had been 18 when his world collapsed; youthful adaptability self-possession and above all, luck, combined to preserve his husk in seven work camps which might have been modeled on the sequence of Dante's circles of hell." ( The Times Literary Supplement)
"Both harrowing and inspirational, The Long Night is a chilling reminder of what can happen when we fail to challenge hatred and bigotry. It should be read by anyone who believes we still have lessons to learn from the Holocaust - and anyone who doesn't." (Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP)

Everyone should read this

Everyone should read this thought provoking book, a horrific time in history that must be remembered - lest we forget and let it happen again in another time and place. Heavy going in places and lots of names but I expect that was meant in the form of a memorial by the author.

Excellent

A superb autobiographical work, which avoids overly dwelling on the destruction of the spirit, the soul, but gives a frank and shocking narrative on the authors journey through 4 years of imprisonment. I’ve read many such accounts, this is undoubtedly one of the best in all respects. For those unfamiliar with the history of the Holocaust, this is an excellent introduction to the crimes that were committed.

Very good

I enjoyed this audiobook. Somewhat like Primo Levi’s If this is a Man/The Truce.

Never Forget.

Thought provoking indightment of what humans are capable of doing to each other. Harrowing reading but I was unable to stop listening to it. May the author and all the victims RIP.

Comprehensive and descriptive - Hauntingly blunt

A detailed account of the atrocities surrounding the Nazi invasion. The author does not shy away from blunt descriptions of events. Moving, harrowing and unforgettable.

An astonishing read.

Loved it. I have read many books on the Holocaust and this is one of the most important, told as it is from the point of view of someone who lived through the brutality of the nazi regime in the worst period of Jewish history.

A thought provoking read/listen

This book will live with me for a long time. We all know that the Holocaust happened but listening to what this young man saw and endured reminds us of just how inhuman man can be. We can only pray that this never, ever happens again.
