About this listen
The second Dirk Gently book by Douglas Adams, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul is a witty detective story perfect for fans of his phenomenally successful The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This new audio edition is hilariously narrated by Stephen Mangan - star of Green Wing, Episodes, and the original Dirk Gently series on the BBC.
When a passenger check-in desk at Terminal Two, Heathrow Airport, shot up through the roof engulfed in a ball of orange flame, the usual people tried to claim responsibility. First the IRA, then the PLO and the Gas Board. Even British Nuclear Fuels rushed out a statement to the effect that the situation was completely under control, that it was a one-in-a-million chance, that there was hardly any radioactive leakage at all and that the site of the explosion would make a nice location for a day out with the kids and a picnic, before finally having to admit that it wasn't actually anything to do with them at all.
No rational cause could be found for the explosion - it was simply designated an act of God. But, thinks Dirk Gently, which God? And why? What God would be hanging around Terminal Two of Heathrow Airport trying to catch the 15:37 to Oslo?
Continue this surreal series with the unfinished The Salmon of Doubt.

Confusing but Entertaining.
There is much crossover of mythology and modern day, which adds to the very involved narrative.

Not as entertaining as the first book.
It's ok. Some witty comments and quite a few laughs, it's Douglas Adams after all, but I found it lacking in substance compare to HHGTTG and the first DG book.
Also the narrator which I thought did excellent work on the first book doesn't shine here. Her had the opportunity to do Scandinavian accents (it even says so in the book) but he bungles it and makes the Scandinavian characters who play a large role sound like Germans instead.

A Joy From Start to Finish
I've been a lifelong fan of Douglas Adams. I don't normally write reviews but feel I need to address some comments made by other reviewers regarding the narration, in case they are dissuaded from purchasing this audiobook from some ill-judged remarks. I thought that Stephen Mangan did a superlative job, as he always does. His delivery was thoroughly engaging and the voices he used for the different characters were excellent. I feel certain that Douglas Adams himself would have approved.
I listened to this over a few days of road trips and didn't want it to end. A truly wonderful story from a master storyteller.

Wonderful
This was a joy to listen to, despite having read the book many years ago.
If you've never read or listened to a Dirk Gently, this is the one to begin with.

wonderful follow up
I'm a big Douglas Adams fan, and have read this book, listened to the radio adaptation and now this very well narrated audio book edition.
It's a good easy listen which I highly recommend to any fan of Adams or quirky humour.

A strange ending to a good read
I really enjoyed listening to the series, Stephen Mangan really brought to life. You could really see the imagery of what he explains in your mind while listening, I would recommend this to my friends, the only thing that I didn’t really like about this was the ending that should’ve been a bit more thought Into how it was written.
