Summary

Perfect for dedicated beginner history buffs, Mark Zuehlke’s The Liri Valley: Canada’s World War II Breakthrough to Rome relays to listeners the story of those Canadian troops who preceded and paved the way for Allied forces into Rome, Italy, during World War II.
Zuehlke’s straightforward storytelling is accentuated by actor William Dufris’ skillful performance, which is authoritative but certainly not devoid of excitement. Dufris doesn’t shy away from moments of heightened tension and emotion, bringing these to the fore in perfect harmony with Zuehlke’s own attempts to highlight the sometimes variable personal recollections of veterans.

All too familiar story of sacrifice
Another in a series of excellent books telling the story of men in war. I had no knowledge of this battle but although tragic in the loss of life on both sides an interesting description of determination and courage.

Humbling and inspiring….
Having walked the Liri Valley as part of memorial to the Campaign Mark Z’s memorial should be required reading for all Canadians for the sacrifices that generation of ‘Canucks’ gave.

Sometimes overlooked (but not forgotten )
I’ve been meaning to not only build a better understanding of not only the Alliy’s slog up through Italy but also have an appreciation of what Canada sacrificed. I was initially listening (and will return to) the Canadian Army in Netherlands, when the battle-hardened campaigners from Italy finally completed the wish for the Canadian Army to fight together. Astonishing that after what the Canadians had experienced that they should be transferred to the bitter last desperate German fighting. As such this is an amazing account of outstanding bravery, debatable leadership and decision-making from the Allie Commanders. A long listen; nevertheless highly recommended. Stuart commended

Detailed history
Excellent research from war diary's and personal accounts, I only wish with these type of audio books there were maps to accompany them (maybe a link to website etc)
