Summary

Robert Greene is a master guide for millions, distilling ancient wisdom and philosophy into essential texts for seekers of power, understanding and mastery. Now he turns to the most important subject of all - understanding people's drives and motivations, even when they are unconscious of them themselves.

We are social animals. Our very lives depend on our relationships with people. Knowing why people do what they do is the most important tool we can possess, without which our other talents can only take us so far. Drawing from the ideas and examples of Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr, and many others, Greene teaches us how to detach ourselves from our own emotions and master self control, how to develop the empathy that leads to insight, how to look behind people's masks, and how to resist conformity to develop your singular sense of purpose.

Whether at work, in relationships, or in shaping the world around you, The Laws of Human Nature offers brilliant tactics for success, self-improvement, and self-defence.

Absolutely phenomenal book!

I will preface this by saying that Robert Greene is my favourite non-fiction writer, meaning I was already pre-set to love this. For those who haven't read any of Roberts work (my question I this scenario being... why?), Robert possesses a brilliant mind that has always been able to interpret human nature in its very essences and draw upon a unique perspective which isn't afraid to say things as they are, rather than the cushioned way we often look at ourselves and our behaviours and motivations behind them. So, it goes without saying that Roberts writing style will greatly appeal to the open mind, one that isn't afraid of seeing itself for what it really is. Utilising figures in history to provide anecdotes and examples before further disecting lessons before providing practical steps for implication, Roberts books really encourage you to think and adjust how you see the world and people. That applies to every one of his books, this one is almost like a culmination of all the previous ones assembled into one, finally breaking into the subject which his previous works have danced around for many years, human nature. This book provides a complete disection of our very ways of thinking and acting, our behavioural patterns and our ways of living. It is utterly fascinating, and has definitely changed my ways of thinking. However, you must possess an open mind to truly appreciate the value of the lessons to be learned here. You must be willing to face who you truly are. It goes without saying that I recommend this book. The narration was also brilliant.

A comprehensive tour de force on human nature

The level of insight and understanding I found in this book was truly satisfying, like a fine dining experience with a top chef. I had no shortage of aha moments listening to this and will revisit again soon. Worth many listens.
The case studies for examples were interesting enough stories in themselves but the insights that follow them are profound.
Highly recommended.
