A very frank account of life as an avid hill goer

A very humorous account of a lifetime on the hills with tales of adventures that most can relate to

Excellent humorous account of mountaineering

Yes, the sound quality could be better. And yes, it needs editing to remove all the mistakes.

But this doesn't take away from the excellent performance by the author of this interesting and entertaining account of a lifetime of walking and climbing in the UK.

Great, one of the best

Rarely an audiobook is narrated as well as it’s written (or vice-versa) but this one really is, and what’s more it’s narrated by the author. Brilliantly done, this is an honest and entertaining autobiographical work which should be of interest to anyone who walks or climbs in the outdoors.

Love John Burn's books but not for audio

The last book of John Burn's that I had left to read. I've loved all of his books, the humour and honest twist on the outdoors. Unfortunately having him narrate this book was honestly so painful to listen to. If you are going to narrate your own book at least invest in a proper microphone - you can get them for £40 from Amazon. This sounds like it was recorded on a phone and there was no editing so confusing stumbles every now and again. I appreciate what John is trying to do but it took me 3 attempts to finish this book, listening only when I had nothing else downloaded. Going to get the paperback instead.

A real account of a journey from novice onwards...

John, offers a down to earth, honest and humerous look back at how it all began that you will probably relate to in more ways than one. He takes you on a journey from naive teenager right through to his later years exploring, discovering and looking for answers as to why some of us choose to venture into wilder, remote places where there are few others about. The writing style is easy to listen to and cunjures up images as the story progresses from what maybe considered a low-tech age of clothing and equipment right through to the modern day. As time moves on John restles with the reality that one day he will have to come to terms with not being able to continue as before and that hillwalking maybe dying out...

Enjoyable history of John's Hillwalking Exploits

Really enjoyed this book. The reading was clear and concise with a few wee stumbles along the way which seemed to add to the character of the book. Enjoyed the stories - never heard of John Burns before so took a gamble on the book and I'm glad I did 👍🏽😊

Really enjoyed this book. Takes you on a journey.

I really enjoyed this book, the author takes you on a journey through his youth and the exuberance of youth with his mountain adventures through middle age, falling in and out of love with his hobby to the present where he gas refound his love of why he went out there in the first place.
Loved it and have purchased the next book Bothy tales.

(A couple of small niggles, narrator takes a bit to get into the swing of it but gets more and more confident as he gets into the book.
Audio quality comes in and out and quite a few line repeats.
All these things are fine for me and do not ruin your enjoyment of the book but just needs a touch more editing.)

Great book!

Loved every minute of this book, brilliant descriptions of Johns journeys, giving even more inspiration to seek the hills! The narration compliments this book perfectly, seagulls in the background, someone going upstairs... John repeating himself... feels like you’re sat in a pub and he’s telling you his story over a pint! Brilliant :)
