About this listen

Bloomsbury presents The King in the North by Max Adams, read by Hamilton McLeod.

A triumph – a Game of Thrones in the Dark Ages' TOM HOLLAND.
The magisterial biography of Oswald Whiteblade, exiled prince of Northumbria, who returned in blood and glory to reclaim his birthright.

A charismatic leader, a warrior whose prowess in battle earned him the epithet Whiteblade, an exiled prince who returned to claim his birthright, the inspiration for Tolkein's Aragorn.

Oswald of Northumbria was the first great English monarch, yet today this legendary figure is all but forgotten. In this panoramic portrait of Dark Age Britain, archaeologist and biographer Max Adams returns the king in the North to his rightful place in history.

Kingly indeed

Fascinating story with so much detail and information but told with a light touch. The narrators voice is so rich and melodious I felt like Merlin himself was sat at my shoulder telling me the stories of my forefathers.

Excellent

A richly detailed, interesting and informative account of the history that most of us are never taught. Thank you.

I really loved this. The narrator had a lovely way of bringing it all fascinating. I hope he does more of this type

Well researched but very challenging to follow what the author is looking to get across

Seems to be well researched too challenging to follow unless you're an academic or have a serious level of knowledge about Oswald of Northumbria and the period in history several hundred years either side of his life. The narrators insistence on pronouncing commonplace everyday words in alternative ways is somewhat annoying. Overall disappointed as to what this book offered me compared to what I, as someone with an average level of local interest, was looking for.
