Summary
Three BBC radio productions of major works by James Joyce – plus Gordon Bowker’s fascinating biographical account of his life
Ulysses
In this full-cast dramatisation of Joyce’s epic modernist novel, the stories of Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom combine as they meander through Dublin in the course of one day, 16 June 1904. Andrew Scott stars as Stephen, with Henry Goodman as Bloom, Niamh Cusack as Molly Bloom and Stephen Rea as the Narrator.
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
An abridged reading of James Joyce's autobiographical masterpiece portraying the adolescence of Stephen Dedalus, who must question the culture and religion of his native land before he can break free to become an artist. Read by Andrew Scott.
Dubliners
This abridged collection of fifteen naturalistic tales depicts an array of characters from childhood, through adolescence, to maturity. Stories of love, loss, friendship, marriage, politics and family combine to create a unified world and a celebration of a city. Read by Stephen Rea.
James Joyce – A Biography
Gordon Bowker’s comprehensive study explores Joyce’s years spent in exile in Europe, and examines how his life shaped his genius. Read by Jim Norton, with Andrew Scott as the voice of Joyce.

A quick stroll through Joyce’s world
Is probably never have got to read much Joyce unabridged (recently finished Portrait) so this was a pleasant trundle through acquiring an idea off what these works are. Nicely presented, I would recommend the short Biography first as you might recognise some of the characters of the books. Really enjoyed this audible. Stuart

the pure drop
Writing this after listening do far only to the biography (highly abridged but nonetheless very interesting) and Dubliners.
I have read all of these works before more than once and have listened to the Jim Norton reading of Ulysses a couple of times. So yes I love Joyce.
I highly commend this on the strength of Stephen Rea’s reading of Dubliners alone. Wonderfully sensitive to the sound of the prose as well as providing excellent character voices.
If Joyce had only written Dubliners he would already deserve the name of genius.

Great way to connect with Ulysses
I have just finished listening to Ulysses and really enjoyed this production and the way it makes the text to accessible. The production and performances are excellent. I hear it is heavily abridged but I found it really engaging and pleasurable and i've bought the book as a result of my enjoyment of this recording: I now want to see what I missed. I have one criticism. There is a sloppy inclusion of some Radio 4 continuity announcement and a short interview with Naimh Cusack right in the middle of the recording! (about 4 hours in). It literally sounds like someone just recorded this off the radio rather than putting together a professional edition. That one moment is really distracting and irritating and I haven't listened to the rest of the collection but I hope there isn't any more!

Abridged too far!
The accents are genuine, the reading/playing is excellent so one gets the atmosphere really well but the whole tihng is too abridged - it would be better to do the books separately un-abridged. A bit disappointing.
