Summary

Eleanor Blake, distraught after breaking up with her fiancé Will, decides to do what most would scarcely dare: Secretly follow him to the island hideaway where he's on holiday with the woman who took her place. But on the shimmering, sun-drenched Sicilian island of Panarea, distractions come in many forms and her fellow hotel guests Lewis and Frannie may not be all they seem either.

Pleasent, easy listening with engaging characters!

Where does The Island Hideaway rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's not exceptional. It's not 'right-up there', but it was a good listen for times when listening must take second place to other activities. It gave a real sense of being away in the sun on a small island. The characters were quite engaging and it popped along at a pleasent pace.

Any additional comments?

The ideal audiobook when you need an easy (but not bland) listen, that you can break away from regularly and pick back up without a problem, even if you've missed a bit.

Not as bad as the other reviews suggest

I almost didn't listen to this after reading through the other reviews, but it wasn't as bad as the other reviews say. It's definitely not a thriller, but is a nice easy listen. Not the best but not the worst

Full

Dull with a cast of annoying, unlikeable characters. Gave up after 7 chapters. Some of LC’s stuff is ok but not this. Like a weird , 7th rate Agatha Christie.

Not what you expect from Candlish - gripping this ain’t…

This reads like a meandering romance, progressing slowly with little action and a rather flat storyline. The entire near 9 hours could be summarised in two sentences. Additionally, I found it challenging to relate to any of the characters; I simply wasn't invested. It was great to fall asleep to, and even skipping parts of the text, the story still made sense. It's not bad, but if you're expecting something akin to the 'Our House' novel, this falls quite short.

Wonderful description of the beautiful setting.

I could visualise myself on the island and felt I could even get myself around. Amazing description of an idyllic setting. . Enjoyable story although some characters were fairly predictable. Claudio and Lewis were glaringly obvious as to their relationships with Franny. The constant mention of cigarettes and lighting up became really annoying. It seemed to be mentioned every few lines and did nothing to enhance the story. Overall a decent read.

Predictable and slightly weird

Honestly I don’t think this is worth your listen. The narration is actually excellent but the story is both predictable, stereotyped but strangely off- kilter…. I kept thinking that something would happen or that the predictability was part of a plot twist but it isn’t !

Very disappointing

Would you try another book written by Louise Candlish or narrated by Antonia Beamish?

The story was weak and boring; that said, I can usually listen with pleasure to most things and would have overlooked the rather "beige" story if it were't for the quite astonishingly awful narration. The intonation of almost every sentence was wrong and made the listen irritating beyond belief. I will never buy a book narrated by Antonia Beamish again. It was the worst book I have listened to.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have given the lead character a bit more of a positive twist and not sound constantly drippy. It only got better at the very end.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Antonia Beamish?

Sandra Duncan.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and intense irritation. Purely from the extremely poor narration.
