Summary

Small-time private investigator Ray Lovell veers between paralysis and delirium in a hospital bed. But before the accident that landed him there, he had promised to find Rose Janko. Rose was married to the charismatic son of a travelling gypsy family, Ivo Janko. When Ray starts to investigate her disappearance he's surprised that her family are so hostile towards him. The Jankos have not had an easy past. They are a clan touched by tragedy - either they are cursed, or they are hiding a terrible secret. Could it be that Rose's discovery of that secret led to her disappearance all those years ago? Soon Ray wishes that he'd never asked the question. In a novel that is totally different from Stef's extraordinary debut The Tenderness of Wolves, she shows herself once more to be a matchless storyteller.

A bit difficult to get into but worth the effort

Once I got into the book, I really enjoyed it. Surprise ending, but just about credible.

Enjoyable listen

I can’t remember much about The Tenderness of Wolves, but I can remember I liked it. I liked this too. Great performance by Dan Stevens- could listen to him read anything. An enjoyable story with a mystery and great characters. Didn’t get the twist even though looking back to clues were there. Solid listen.

Engaging tale

The story set amongst travelling gypsies is a mystery tale of family secrets. Although I guessed a bit ahead and was impatient for the detective to catch up I did need to revise my guess a few times and never lost interest. This is mainly due to the characters, from the two narrators to the family and other characters. Beautifully read, good range of character voices and tones. The sense of place was detailed but not overlong. Terrific stuff

A great read Steph Penney does not disappoint

Really got engaged with the characters especially JJ. It was good to explore the missing person versus murder with Ray. Whilst I guessed the ending it didn't really matter..it was well thought through and I wanted the characters end story. Would recommend
