About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
We live under an ideology that preys on every aspect of our lives: our education and our jobs; our healthcare and our leisure; our relationships and our mental wellbeing; even the planet we inhabit – the very air we breathe. So pervasive has it become that, for most people, it has no name. It seems unavoidable, like a natural law.
But trace it back to its roots, and we discover that it is neither inevitable nor immutable. It was conceived, propagated, and then concealed by the powerful few. It is time to bring it into the light - and, in doing so, to find an alternative worth fighting for.
Neoliberalism. Do you know what it is?

Brilliant.
The way in which the authors have interconnected many if not all our present day concerns.

Diagnosis, cure and a health plan going forward!
Thank you for the clarity in which you examine the systemic malaise, corruption and pathologies of neoliberalism… and presenting a compelling cure for this deadly illness (which is making life on earth increasingly difficult, dangerous and miserable)… with climate change, loss of biodiversity and stripping the earth of resources and her natural resilience.
The radical possibilities of different ways of doing things, which would benefit our lives, communities and natural systems are beautifully explored and await us - if we can act with courage, imagination and collective wisdom.

Terrifying truth!
I couldn’t put it down, despite mounting outrage, fury and a sense of hopelessness. I got to the end and felt that at last, I fully understood the truth. The Rich and their political puppets care nothing for the disabled, the poor, public services etc. They only care about extracting as much profit for themselves by any means, stopping at nothing, not even in the face of climate disaster that will kill them too. As the crisis continues to ratchet up, they are planning new airports and oil rigs and felling every tree they can find to convert into money. But they will soon need these trees to make their own coffins. This book fired me up to want to do something to contribute to the changes the authors hope for. But what can I do other than vote Labour?

GM explains so clearly as always
George Monbiot understands what he is writing about so well and in such depth that he is able to explain really clearly and convincingly what he wants to get across. I am going to re-read it to memorise the main arguments.

Genius
This book manages to succinctly draw together complex ideologies and realities and present everything that’s wrong with neoliberalism. More than that it transported me from political despair towards a heartwarming vision for a better future. Thanks George. As ever genius made accessible.

The term and idea of 'Limitarianism' is what we have been waiting for
This is a must read, especially for younger generations who to now about the change in ideology from social democracy to capitalist neoliberalism. George does a wonderful job as usual succinctly explaining the history of how we ended up here and how we need to move into the next story post neoliberalism to one of Limitarianism, of accumulation to private Sufficiency and public luxury where decisions on investment is democratised.
LIMITARIANISM can't come quick enough snd it will take everyone from all political persuasions to believe in the next story that is one of how we survive and thrive together as one community on one planet. Excellent book.

Powerful takedown of the dominance of neoliberalism
I think George's own writing and collaborations with others, such as this one, are such compelling reads. They take often complex subjects and make them really understandable by the layperson. Every one of his stories has left me changed, or wanting change with some deep insight into the current dominant ideology.
This book in particular reminds us that the dominance of neoliberalism isn't that old, is not there as a natural law and we can shake it off! There are better ways to govern, and we can implement them. We have to tell a new, better story for how we want to live.
One powerful concept that will stay with me is the idea of public luxury, private sufficiency. We can't all have a private jet, swimming pool, yacht, private tutor and 5 acre garden. BUT we can collectively have public services and spaces so that everyone can have access to those things.
Read it, learn loads, connect and organise!

A must read (listen) for our times
I got through this book in just over a day. I rarely find a book so impossible to put down. But for me, this was the right book at the right time.
I recently came across George Monbiot and I’ve read all his book here back to back.
He’s a beautiful narrator and excellent author. I highly recommend this book and any of his others.
