THE GAME'S AFOOT...

It is November 1890 and London is gripped by a merciless winter. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are enjoying tea by the fire when an agitated gentleman arrives unannounced at 221b Baker Street. He begs Holmes for help, telling the unnerving story of a scar-faced man with piercing eyes who has stalked him in recent weeks. Intrigued by the man's tale, Holmes and Watson find themselves swiftly drawn into a series of puzzling and sinister events, stretching from the gas-lit streets of London to the teeming criminal underworld of Boston. As the pair delve deeper into the case, they stumble across a whispered phrase 'the House of Silk': a mysterious entity and foe more deadly than any Holmes has encountered, and a conspiracy that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of society itself. With devilish plotting and excellent characterisation, bestselling author Anthony Horowitz delivers a first-rate Sherlock Holmes mystery for a modern readership whilst remaining utterly true to the spirit of the original Conan Doyle books. Sherlock Holmes is back with all the nuance, pace and powers of deduction that make him the world's greatest and most celebrated detective.

I think Conan Doyle would approve

I was wary of buying this book as I feared that the author couldn't match Conan Doyle's inventiveness of plot. However, I was wrong: it's an excellent, intricate and satisfyingly complicated story that kept me gripped and eager to find out what happened next. Those of you who have read/listened to Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books will take pleasure in the allusions to characters from the original series that are grafted into this homage to a master of detective fiction. The pleasure of this audio version is greatly enhanced by Derek Jacobi's lively narration and ability to mimic many different accents.

Brilliant performance

The author has the characters off a treat, and Derek Jacobi delivers it brilliantly. Indeed, his delivery is about the best I have yet heard.

True to Conan Doyle

I was an avid fan of the Sherlock Holmes books in my youth and read every one. When I found this I was dubious about the continuation such a celebrated series but I was not disappointed. It was very true in style and stioryline although a refreshingly new plot. I really enjoyed the book and its narration was a credit to the author.

A brilliant mystery

What a wonderful new take on Sherlock Holmes! Well done Anthony Horowitz! Atmospheric and dramatic! Not many authors are able to create a picture and transport you into their imaginary world with just a few words, but this is what Horowitz achieved with The House of Silk. The sinister atmosphere, the sense of doom, the mystery - all you may wish for. The book is well paced and thoroughly enjoyable. Derek Jacobi makes a great contribution with his brilliant narration! I shall listen to this book again and again!

Didn't disappoint!

For me, audio books are as much about the narrator as about the book itself. For this particular book, Derek Jacobi was the perfect choice and managed to convey atmosphere and mystery perfectly. I was concerned that I would not enjoy this Holmes story as much as the original Conan Doyle ones but there was no need to be worried - the story flowed very well and it was cleverly written. I enjoyed it immensely

A very worthy Sherlock Holmes story

I have no hesitation in giving this audiobook five stars. As well as being a gifted original writer Anthony Horowitz is an outstanding mimic, as this Sherlock Holmes story clearly demonstrates. The atmosphere of a Holmes mystery is perfectly evoked and the story itself is entirely satisfying from beginning to end. Derek Jacobi’s narration complements the story perfectly. Highly recommended !

Dastardly deeds uncovered

A complex story fascinating enough to hold the interest of the listener until the final uncovering of the plot. The author gives insights to the characters of both Holmes and Watson as well as describing the villains the piece with memorable detail and the descriptions of London are realistic.
I am sure this story will be enjoyed by many.

to take such a well known and well loved character on another adventure is always going to be risky but anthony horowitz just hits the button with a brilliant twist-and-turn that held my attention right to the end ... the guy's a genius
