About this listen

A cosy, enchanting story about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place. The House in the Cerulean Sea is an uplifting, heart-warming queer fantasy from TJ Klune and A New York Times, USA Today and Washington Post bestseller.

‘I loved it. It is like being wrapped up in a big gay blanket. Simply perfect’ V. E. Schwab, author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

Linus Baker leads a quiet life. At forty, he has a tiny house with a devious cat and his beloved records for company. And at the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, he’s spent many dull years monitoring their orphanages.

Then one day, Linus is summoned by Extremely Upper Management and given a highly classified assignment. He must travel to an orphanage where six dangerous children reside – including the Antichrist.

At the orphanage, Linus must somehow determine if these children could bring about the end of days. But their guardian, the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, will do anything to protect his wards. And, as Arthur and Linus grow ever closer, Linus must choose: his duty, or his dreams . . .

Continue the adventure with the second entry in the Cerulean Chronicles, Somewhere Beyond the Sea.

‘This quirky fantasy will sweep you away’ – The New York Times

Utterly charming and uplifting

I really enjoyed this book. Made me feel a bit better about the world and was probably the most cheering listen I have since the Becky Chambers' Monk and Robot books. It's a very gentle, uncomplicated, bitter sweet experience, much like the characters who are immensley likeable. I'm not for an instant saying that it is as layered or cutting edge as some hard core bits of fantasy writing or that every aspect has been thought through to a Tolkeinesque depth (the parental lineage of some characters raise as many questions as answers), and its simple message of tolerance and inclusion written in a soothing style mean that you are unlikely to be massively surprised by major plot twists, but that doesn't make it any the less enjoyable, I highly recommend this uplifting creation and will seek out more from the author. I wish the marks were out of 10 so I could give it a fat nine. Not perfect, but good for the soul. I gave it a 5/5 as, in the spirit of the writing, a 4 just felt mean..

Cutesy feel good story

A twee story about a orphanage inspector where magical children live. He slowly falls in love (and out of love with the city & his job). Feels like a young adult book with a not so subtle take on inclusion & prejudice. It’s a nice feel-good, holiday type read or good as a mix up from another genre.
The narration was pretty annoying though!

LOVED IT

Utterly beautiful and heartwarming story.
As an adopted gay man I really resonated with a lot of things in this story and was brought to tears a few times.

“Hate is loud, but I think you'll learn it's because it's only a few people shouting, desperate to be heard. · “Change often starts with the smallest of whispers”

Such a big warm hug!

I loved this story about inclusion and not taking people at face value. It’s such a warm big hug. The different children in an orphanage and their magical powers had me sucked in. A story of love and acceptance and growth. The only negative I have was about the voice doing the audio I hated it so much very monotone and dull. Made listing to the book very difficult I recommend reading it as a book.

The Most Beautiful Story

This has to be the most wonderful, beautiful story I’ve ever read and I read a lot. I loved the characters, they were all wonderful and the narrator was fabulous, bringing them all to life. This should be standard reading in every school. So many beautiful lessons inside of it about accepting yourself and others for who they are.
