About this listen

This book contains scenes of explicit violence and gore, and uncomfortable sexual themes.

One gruesome night, Lucy Blacelli is kidnapped from her family in the worst way possible, and ends up in a mysterious and frightful castle. In the midst of all the chaotic and supernatural happenings here, Lucy finds comfort in two strange companions as they help her navigate the mansion to freedom.

Every room is filled with traps, puzzles, architectural mishaps, and strange creatures, and the way out seems to be nowhere in sight.

After learning the truth and reasoning behind why she was kidnapped, and who the other people are at the castle, it sends Lucy into a state of shock. Determined more than ever, she pushes on through her fears and confusion to get out of this nightmare.

One thing is certain, she will never be the same after this. Mentally or physically…

The story became quite unnerving .

I liked the way it moved from horror to joy . The characters were all well written and ultimately likeable.. the narration was excellent especially Pilby. I would read more of this authors works, if she keeps a s good a narrator as mr. Jackson.

This is not “narrated” - it is acted out and brought to life.

I’m already on my second listen, I think this is going to become one of my go-to “comfort” listens.
I’ve come across a few audiobooks now where I’ve thought to myself, if I was reading that I’d probably put it down but the narrator makes it so enjoyable with their performance. This is definitely one of those times!
The narration in this is warm and cosy - you really feel that he’s *in* the story, and you can actually tell he’s enjoying it too! He’s really engaged in it, which engages the audience too. Different voices (and accents) for different characters really bring the story to life, and you can hear various different emotions in his voice when called for. It’s also great to hear an accent done well when called for. The voice acting makes you either care about/love the characters or hate them - there’s one character that just absolutely disgusted me, but that’s a sign of a good actor! Nice changes in pacing and variation of tone too - and it flowed really well. My only complaint is that I wish it had been a bit longer!

As for the book itself, I really liked the story - thought it was quite unique, and I really liked the characters too. I liked the setting as well, kind of had a feel of a point and click video game to it. Infact this book would make a great video game actually!

But if I’m really honest, as I’ve said, if I was reading it in print, I think I’d have put it down. Some of the word choices were a bit jarring.

A thoroughly enjoyable listen - can’t wait to hear more from this narrator!

Side note: this story would make a great basis for a puzzley adventure type video game!
