Summary

A hundred years ago, a man with a secret could travel a few hundred miles and give himself a new name and life story. No one would be any the wiser, as long as he didn’t give anyone a reason to start asking questions. These days, that’s not so easy, with everyone on social media and CCTV on every street corner. So Daniel Mackmain keeps his head down and keeps himself to himself.

But now a girl has been murdered, and the Derbyshire police are taking a closer look at a loner who travels from place to place, picking up work as he goes. Worse, Dan realises the murder involves the hidden world he was born into. When no one else can see the truth, who will see justice done?

A modern fantasy rooted in the ancient myths and folklore of the British Isles.

Favourite Read This Year (… so far)

Excellent story with well thought out time line. It pays excellent homage to regional folklore and English History.

The story (stories) all intertwine to a satisfactory conclusion, whilst leading you through an enjoyable life of fantasy and reality.

Will read more from this series!

Entrancing

The blend of modern and mythical themes made for an exciting storyline, with the twists that police intervention and the relationships with the non mystical characters kept my interest throughout. Now I feel that I would like to know more about English Folklore.

An English Greenwood Thriller

I enjoyed this book. If it were an ordinary detective story it would be rather run of the mill but a supernatural element keeps it interesting. I enjoy the degree of whimsy in the Ben Aaronovitch books for example but the more 'sombre' tone makes for a nice change here. The main character is well drawn and the additional characters are believable. The final section of the book does feel a little like an add on despite the fact that the story has been leading to it.

Brilliant, but don't get the sequel

Such a great read, very well narrated. I was really looking forward to the sequel, but they changed narrator and the new one is genuinely unlistenable.

Folklore meets modern day

Really liked the way the folklore is dealt with in the modern world in this engaging story. Had to keep listening! Not sure what to write without giving any spoilers! A worthy listen if you like the outdoors and British folklore!

Editing Required

Good story but very drawn out. I think it could have done with some serious editing.
