About this listen
June 1940. As World War Two rages, Daphne Devine remains in London, performing each night as assistant to stage magician Jonty Trevelyan, aka the Grand Mystique. Then the secret service call. For, aware of Hitler's belief in the occult, the war office has set up a hidden cohort to exploit this quirk in the enemy's chain of command.
Daphne and Jonty find themselves far from the glitz and glamour of the theatre, deep inside the lower levels of Wormwood Scrubs prison. Here, they join secret ranks of occultists, surrealists, and other eccentrics co-opted to the war effort. There is one goal: to avert invasion on British shores. Soon Daphne realises she must risk everything if there is any chance of saving her country.

Another triumph for Syd Moore
The was long awaited and I loved it. A well crafted exercise in bringing history and fiction together with great characterisation.

A well researched and authentic story illuminated by magic
I love historical fiction and this book does not disappoint. It’s an unusual take on WWII and one that is not often written about. Magic and the occult as a weapon of war is interesting enough on its own, but immersing myself in the subject through such a well researched gripping story was fantastic - and the narrator did a great job of varying the voices on three different characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

A great story
Really enjoyed this new book from Syd Moore.
Penelope Rawlins is the perfect narrator for it.
If you have enjoyed the Strange magic series and even if you haven't you'll enjoy this.

Nicely paced, engaging story, believable and page turning
Led by a empathetic 1940s Lara Croft like character, a great yarn, magic and nasty Nazis, what's not to like? I look forward to the next installment

Very enjoyable
I was a little sceptical after listening to the Essex Witch museum, which was a nice escape from reality, but this was absolutely absorbing. With a cameo appearance from Septemis Strange, and a twist of counter intelligence of the wyrd kind. Can't wait for the next book from Syd Moore.

Disappointing
I really looked forward to this book being released and was really disappointed. Having read her series that I was riveted to I knew it would be good but I was wrong. I put it down and tried again but it was no good. The story was bitty and the characters didn’t have depth. Sadly it has put me off buying anything else from the author. The truth is I expected a follow up of the Essex Witch series as I didn’t think that it had finished. I wasted my money.

I paid money for this
From start to finish it was a complete waste of my time and money.
I loved “Strange “ books but this was terrible no substance whatsoever. I attempted to return this book, but because I had bought it with cash and not a credit was unable to do so. After that I tried again with hope of it getting going (It didn’t) the best and only interesting part was the facts about operation Sea lion which I was aware of. Not sure what happened with this story but not recommended.
