About this listen

DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but when one of her neighbours goes missing, she feels duty-bound to find out what happened. It’s an easy job to track the young woman down to the Writers’ House, a country retreat where aspiring authors gather to work on their novels.

But things get complicated when a body is discovered and Vera’s neighbour is found with a knife in her hand. Vera knows that she should hand the case over to someone else. But the investigation is too tempting and she’s never been one to follow the rules.

Working with Sergeant Joe Ashworth, she starts the hunt for a murderer who has turned killing into an art form.

Excellent

Not as atmospheric as some of hers - but really fleshes out Vera as a character with all her faults.

Gripping from start to finish. Brilliant

Couldn't put it down. Was a true Vera Stanhope murder mystery right to the finish.

Good but not the best.

The story was good enough but the performance by the narrator lets these books down. J Birkett just cannot do accents or characterizations.

Vera - Always a good story

Well read Vera story. Always a lot of red herrings but brought to a realistic conclusion

I love the Vera series on the TV and the way this was read I could see the whole thing in my mind’s eye

Great story as always with a twist

Enjoyed this one and I will be listening to it again. The performance was good and the accents added to the characters without being so broad that us from the rest of the world could not follow.

Evocative tale of literary folk

Loved the accents, the story, the twists and turns. Sometimes a bit too convoluted to be believable but a well told tale beautifully read.
