Summary

The Frighteners follows the quest of Peter Laws, a Baptist minister with a penchant for the macabre, to understand why so many people love things that are spooky, morbid and downright repellent. He meets vampires, hunts werewolves in Hull, talks to a man who has slept on a mortuary slab to help him deal with a diagnosis, and is chased by a chainsaw-wielding maniac through a farmhouse full of hanging bodies.

Staring into the darkness of a Transylvanian night, he asks: what is it that makes millions of people seek to be disgusted and freaked out? And in a world that worships rationality and points an accusing finger at violent video games and gruesome films, can an interest in horror culture actually give us safe ways to confront our mortality? Might it even have power to re-enchant our jaded world?

Grab your crucifixes, pack the silver bullets and join the Sinister Minister on his romp into our morbid curiosities.

Fantastic book!

Funny, thought provoking, fascinating and informative. I loved every gruesome minute of it. Perfectly narrated too, as if the author is a lovely down to earth old friend. Full of all kinds of interesting stuff.

A fantastic journey into why we love to be scared.

This book is a refreshing look into why we love to be scared. Peter Laws words are brought to life by the engaging tone of Mark Meadows narration. A essential read/Listen to anyone who loves horror, the paranormal or scare (Haunted) Attractions. As a producer of theatre productions in this genre it is a valuable tool in how the people that visit me attractions tick, which I will come back to again and again.

Frightfully Delightful

A really touching look into why we seek out horror and the macabre. Peter Laws has an amazing literary voice and I love more reads like this.

Pretty self indulgent

Having seen some of Law's work before I'd got the impression he was pretty self indulgent - from the Frighteners audio book that's definitely more than evident. There's also not a huge amount of depth here, more just a discussion on how much he enjoys spooky stuff... lots of filler.

Terrible

Don’t waste your time or money. Author is condescending, this book is pointless and not entertaining at all. Avoid!
