A Fun Frolic

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would. As to why? This is a fun book, and the narrator does a fair job of telling the story.

What did you like best about this story?

The three main characters were so well written that they could almost be real people, with all the flaws and foibles that real people have. I also loved the humour. Even though not everything in the garden was rosy, there was a great deal of fun, and laughter to be had from this story.

Which character – as performed by Bill Hensel – was your favourite?

I liked the drunken prince, Darvish. But I also like the thief Aaron. I wasn't very fond of the wizard Chandra.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Same as the tag line for this review. A Fun Frolic

Any additional comments?

I read this book years ago, and really enjoyed it. I don't often read single books, preferring series to stand alone stories. I really liked the characters of Darvish and Aaron, both very different on the surface, but so very similar underneath. I would like to thank Bill Hensel for doing a passable job of reading this book, though I do wonder about some of the odd pauses in strange places. That said he did give the characters, all of them, a sense of individuality, so that the listener could distinguish between the various characters easily and also infused the story with the humour it was supposed to contain. So many of my favorite books have been ruined in this format by terrible narrators, I was so relieved that this one was done as well as it was. All told, a keeper this one. I'll very likely listen to this again at some point, Well done.

A tale that ages very well!

Read this year's ago and loved it then. Just heard the audio book version and it is still excellent! I think the central relationships are beautifully crafted and raise this well above the standard of the usual 'swords & sorcery'.
