Summary

The long-awaited sequel to the number one Amazon and Audible best seller The Stone Man, shortlisted for Audible Book of the Year 2015.

On a quiet seafront in the middle of the afternoon the sun sets, the clouds part and something like a pale, elongated human figure appears on the horizon.

For Maria, watching from the beach, it’s proof that she should never have dared to return. Five years earlier, her life shattered by the arrival of the Stone Man, she’d fled the country. But now she can’t escape: suddenly, there are news reports of ‘Empty Men’ materialising all around the coast, and the roads are gridlocked. The Empty Men are killers, and they’re heading inland.

A hundred miles from the sea, lonely, grieving Eric obsessively keeps watch in the ruins of Coventry, never straying far from Ground Zero, the site of the Stone Man’s first appearance. For five years, Eric has known there was a massive government cover-up of the circumstances surrounding the Stone Man and its disappearance, and he’s determined to find the truth.

As Maria battles the Empty Men in a desperate chase for survival and Eric is caught in a terrifying transformation of Ground Zero, both find themselves on a path leading straight to the heart of the Stone Man mystery.

Chilling, fast-paced and full of stunning twists, this is the highly anticipated second book in Luke Smitherd’s Stone Man series.

The audio equivalent of a page-turner!

I enjoyed this even more than The Stone Man. A solid, tense and dramatic sequel that leaves you wanting even more.

A brilliant follow up to the first book

Just like the first one you won't be able to put this down. It is different from the first with a slightly different narrative and tone but is equally as engaging. As always Luke open up new dark areas of your mind and plays to your fears. I love this author and think he is out national treasure of sci horror. One day he is going to be huge.

Luke & Matt do it again!

The follow up to The Stone Man.
Another fantastic listen. Luke's ideas and writing (what a strange man he must be!) plus Matt's narration do it again.

Excellent sequel!

Same narrator as the original but had a much better grip on female voices this time - less breathy! really enjoyed this sequel with new characters that linked so well to characters in the original story. In fact, the characters were really well defined and believeable -my favourite part was the initial conversation between Maria and Jude - the rush of words tripping over themselves was just spot on! Clever and very original storyline, so worth listening to!

A sequel that feels like that start of something

I loved The Stone Man, it's an exceptional story and this is a welcome follow-up but is definitely the start of the journey for the protagonists and so feels a little long and incomplete. I'm certainly hooked on the world it portrays and I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.

Worth the wait? Yes I think so overall.

This is a difficult review to write as it may sound overly negative when it shouldn't. Overall its very, very good and brings a lot more depth to the stone man story. However I almost gave up during the first third of this book not because of the plot but because of how feeble, whiney and annoying the two main characters were. They only really improve as other people are introduced, overlook the annoyance they provide in the first few hours and you may start to like them.....but that's not a promise.

Good second instalment

Everything always gets mixed reviews but I thought this was a solid second instalment with a strong story and some good characters. Worth a listen.
