About this listen

Step into the wild.

Age thirty-eight and feeling every day of it, Katherine May sets out to walk the 630-mile South West Coast Path. Determined to reconnect with her sense of self and rediscover her love of nature, she seeks to understand why everyday life can feel overwhelming and isolating; why sensory environments can become all-consuming and why normality seems to involve social expectations that are exhausting. As she begins her journey, answers begin to unfold—starting with a chance encounter with a voice on the radio that sparks the realisation that she may be autistic. Katherine’s walking becomes a process of both psychological and physical exploration and moments of discovery as she navigates and re-evaluates her life so far.

An immersive audio drama based on the original memoir The Electricity of Every Living Thing by Katherine May. This series compels you to walk with Katherine on her journey along the line of the South West Coast. In this adaptation, Katherine’s story is recreated as an immersive sensory journey detailing a different way of being in the world -and becomes a different way of experiencing an audio drama.

This series is an adaptation of an original memoir by Katherine May. The story is recreated as an immersive audio drama that details a different way of being in the world—and is a different way of experiencing an audio drama. You can listen either on speakers or by using headphones. Each way of listening provides a different experience. We encourage listeners to try both and settle on the one best for you.

This dramatisation contains content listeners may find sensitive or distressing, reflecting the author’s account of autistic experience. This includes references to bullying, depression, self-harm, eating disorders, melt-downs, medical language and negative attitudes towards neurodivergent/autistic people. There are also some scenes conveying the acuity of sensory experience which may be triggering. The techniques can be intensive, so we encourage listeners to be aware of this when choosing where and when to experience the piece.

Starring Amy McAllister, Alex Austin, Debra Baker, Laurie Brett, Saffron Coomber, Jason Forbes, Raj Ghatak, Peter Gold, Akiya Henry, Veera Lapinkoski, Yasmin Mwanza, Sid Sagar, Maya Saroya, Clement Stokes and Milo Twomey

Beautifully produced

Took me a few attempts to start due to its clever production and use of layers of sounds. But an absolutely beautiful listen. Loved it and kept finding excuses to go for solo missions so I could keep listening to it.

The beauty of diversity shown so intimately

I’m a late diagnosed autistic woman. Katherine May’s words brought to life in this performance really hit home for me in the best kind of way. I felt seen. Beautiful production.

To understand my autistic daughter

I bought this to try to understand more of what my daughter hears and feels when overwhelmed. The soundscape is amazing. Lived experience is so important to help us understand and this is a great example. I have recommended already to many.

Very enlightening.

I found this book really interesting, helping me to understand about the experience of ASD, but it also helped me to understand myself, too, and what I struggle with. It's a story about someone coming to terms with themselves and how they experience the world - a journey towards acceptance and peace. The ending was wonderful, I thought. I do recommend it.

excellent

an excellent dramatisation, which was brilliantly played. As someone who was also diagnosed ASD later in life, l was, of course, intrigued to learn about Katherine May's experiences, especially as l'd just finished her book 'Wintering', which l thoroughly enjoyed. Some of her experiences, obviously, are not my own, but many were and l found myself crying, cringing and laughing in recognition. The reason l gave 4 stars overall, is because l found the 'white noise' and other parts of the soundtrack, incredibly difficult to listen to; often having to put my hands over my ears to drown it out and sometimes physically jumping at loud sounds or shouting voices. Obviously, l understand why this was done, in an attempt to convey the confusion and sense of overwhelm in difficult situations, but as someone on the spectrum myself, l found these aspects very difficult.

Thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking

An enjoyable listen, would be particular interest to neurodivergent mothers. The story leant itself well to the radio-play format. I would have given the story 5 stars but I felt the denouement was a little slow.

A rare insight into how neurodiversity must feel

Having read some of Katherine’s other books, I found this both fascinating and at some times difficult to listen to. It highlighted to me that to live with neurodiversity in the modern world must be incredibly hard, the breaks away, the long walks and escape from the crowds and day-to-day really resonated and made me recognise my own need to escape.

Would highly recommend this book to everyone

This book is informative, easy to listen to or read. It has a vast amount of information and depth. The audio addition is a lovely listen, with bird song and waves also. It has an array of sounds I’ve never heard on an audio book before. But it made it all the more enjoyable. It was jam packed with information that was useful and interesting too.
If you haven’t already read it I would definitely recommend you find the other book too by Katherine. It’s a delight too. Title is Wintering. A fantastic read. I recommend it to everyone. This one didn’t disappoint either. I hadn’t realised it was about ASD but do now.
I have three relatives with autism so it is the first book I’ve actually read about ASD and the process that some go through differed from the one I have known. But it’s interesting to hear how others experience this world and how they came about discovering ASD too. 5⭐️ book 📕
