About this listen
It has been 20 years since the serial killer known as The Black Heart Killer terrorized the town of Newport in 1979. Life mostly returned to normal after the killer was captured. All the townspeople have to do is stay out of the woods where the bodies were abandoned—their chests ripped open, and their hearts torn out....
Howie Burke and his friends decide rules are meant to be broken. That’s what 15-year-old kids do. On a beautiful fall day when they decide to go out in the woods to film a horror movie, they stumble across a mysterious grave. What they don’t know is that they are about to release an evil on the town unlike anything in their home-made movies. They will soon uncover the secrets of the Black Heart Killer, and what it truly means to be cursed.

“A remarkably malevolent debut that will leave you reaching for your talisman. Durgin takes all the right risks and proves nobody is safe in this impressive coming-of-age novel about a small town with a dark past.” (Joshua Marsella, author of Hunger For Death)
“The Cursed Among Us is a horror novel with its heart in the right place—ready to be ripped out! Containing surprising and sometimes stunning emotional depth, this homage to 90s B-movies and supernatural documentaries explores the agony of growing up and holding onto friendships when the world seems determined to rip everything you love apart.” (Joseph Sale, author of Dark Hilarity)

Coming-of-age horror
I recently listened to "Cursed Among Us" by John Durgin, which was a terrific experience.
The characters are well-developed, and the author does an excellent job of creating a suspenseful atmosphere. By the end of the book, the pace accelerates, making the journey worthwhile. I wish we had more information about the background of the story, maybe we'll have it in a sequel.
Overall, I highly recommend "Cursed Among Us" to anyone who enjoys a good coming-of-age horror or a small-town horror.

Supernatural Horror dripping in 90’s nostalgia
The Black Heart Killer terrorised the town of Newport in 1979 until he was captured, he killed viciously tearing chests open and ripping out the hearts.
20yrs later the locals know to stay out of the woods but Howie Burke and his friends decide to make a horror movie in the woods, they are 15yrs old and feel invincible besides, the killer has been caught. So on an autumn day they the go into the woods, find a strange grave and release evil onto their hometown, the true curse of the Black Heart Killer is unleashed.
This is pure 90’s nostalgia, a supernatural horror full of dark obsession and black magic, it is such a fun ride into the slasher films of the era. It is gory and gruesome and is a must for horror fans.
However, at its heart this is also a tale of friendship, growing up, growing apart and forced change, in fact a true classic coming of age story. I loved the four boys, they are written so well and I became really attached to them and wanted them to survive (you will have to read to find out if they did!) A small town with a dark secret, as a debut this is fantastic.

4th times a charm?
To get the bad out of the way, the narrator is not for me. It seems like I'm a rarity here. This is my fourth audiobook by the performer and they just can't take me to the place I need to go with this type of novel. Sorry!
I switched from audio to written once I realized it would enrich my experience tenfold, which is exactly what happened. A bunch of teen boys hunting evil in the woods? Yes please!
I fucking love serial killer books like this. Set in the 90's? Even better. The book did not disappoint. The second the prologue ended I knew I was in for a brilliant, bumpy ride.
This is my second read from the author, and I found the pros and cons very similar between the two. Intriguing all the way through. Strong characters with history and connections. Insane villians. The repetitive nature behind certain sections remains a bit of a sore spot(repeating the how/who of someone passing away just a few chapters earlier).
I look forward to reading more from the author.

Nostalgic 90s Horror
Brilliant story, kids vs undead witch, it has all the elements you'd expect, group of friends, one horrible parent, conspiracy and of course, the monster herself.
Loved it.
Excellent narration too.
I was lucky enough to receive my copy free of charge in exchange for my honest review.

Great coming of age horror story!
Its the same old story: Some kids accidentally awaken an old evil, people die and the kids has to stop the big evil. Yet Durgin manages to make it fresh, with plenty of 00s nostalgia. its gory and violent, With well written teenage characters and an plot that does not loose any pacing. A+ work done in this here tale!I will be reading more of Durgins work going ahead.
At this point its a given that Joe Hempel delivers excellent narration to any book he is involved in!

Great horror story and characters, set in the 90s!
So much 90s nostalgia in this entartaining book about the occult!
As much as I liked the story I think for me it was the characters that made the book so enjoyable! I might be swayed as the timeline of this novel coincides with when I was a kid as well and so many memories came flooding as I was listening to it!
The narrator Joe Hempel was fantastic and I enjoyed the audiobook really much!! Loved the relationship of the kids and their love of horror films that unfortunately unveiled an unimaginable terror!
Also, right at the end there is a twist that I honestly did not expect! So good!
Loved the concept, the setting and the characters and loved the gore as well!!
Thank you to John Durgin for the opportunity to listen to it and this is my honest review.
