About this listen

F. Scott Fitzgerald makes antebellum Baltimore his setting for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a fantastical tale with some Poe-like overtones about a baby born at age 70 who then lives life in reverse, his hair turning "in the dozen years of his life from white to iron-gray, the network of wrinkles on his face becoming less pronounced". What ramifications that creates for Benjamin's relationship with his father first and then later with his wife and his own son makes for some fantastical situations.

Amusing story

Well narrated, although story a little short. Would however make an interesting movie one day?

Sad, but also funny at times

I think I find the book to be more interesting than the movie. It had so many moments I laughed out loud, and just as many sad ones. The story itself is one of a kind, a story that can only be written once.

One of my favorite passages:

A few people who were unfailingly polite racked their brains for compliments to give to the parents--and finally hit upon the ingenious device of declaring that the baby resembled his grandfather, a fact which, due to the standard state of decay common to all men of seventy, could not be denied. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Button were not pleased, and Benjamin's grandfather was furiously insulted. 🤣

Curious indeed

A genuinely absurd tale, in miniature, at just over an hour long. Perhaps it needs a second listen to see if the point of the story becomes clear.
‘Youth is wasted on the young’? Well, not really as as he doesn’t achieve more, or find greater pleasure in his numerical or psychological youth than anyone else. His condition precipitates a lifetime of abuse and frustration, save for a very brief spell in youthful middle age.
But there are some unexpectedly funny lines which have a surreal Python feel. But but what’s the point?

A really sad story

I loved this book. Such a sad tale of old Benjamin always struggling to fit into this world.
It was narrated perfectly and was a wonderful short story. I would recommend to anyone.
