About this listen

Colditz - the dreaded POW camp was supposed to be impregnable. It was the German fortress from which there was no escape. It had been escape-proof in the 1914-18 war and was to be again in the Second World War, according to the Germans... This is the true story that has passed into legend: the story of the incredible courage and daredevil ingenuity of those who refused to admit defeat - those who burrowed, leapt and ran their way to freedom. It is the story of the finest escapers of World War Two, culminating in the author’s own dramatic escape in 1942.

Brilliant from start to finish

Absolutely whizzed through this. Well read with great pace and just rammed full of daredevil stories.

A different era

First read this as a teenager in the 60’s when it inspired me to ‘never give up’. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it again but couldn’t help wondering if today’s entitled youngsters would have behaved as these brave men did.

An excellent story very well told

The narration was brilliant, the story excellent, very well told. A stark reminder for the many history deniers that seem to have sprung up recently.

Awe inspiring endurance

Read the book as a teenager & remember the TV series. Even as a female they inspired me back then & helped me develop a mindset for endurance. Listening again 40 years after I 1st read, it’s hard to imagine this was real & not Hollywood. Also hard to imagine Germans as enemies or being at war like this now. If you are into books on endurance, ingenuity, bravery & teamwork this one is a must. Even if you are not then it’s interesting history. Also interesting is that emotions are only touched upon. A relief, given they must have been intense. Camaraderie when in a tight spot is probably key

Nostalgia is not as good as it used to be.

65 years ago this tale of daring do inspired me to remove floorboards to get under my house. The story is still fascinating with moments of heroism but its delivery seems rather flat now.

Life in Colditz

Clearly read with climax at the end. Finished wanting to see the televised version.

fascinating and inspirational

Amazing tales of the determination and ingenuity of people in such difficult circumstances. The narrator was easy to follow & the tone of his voice made him sound like one of the officers.

Childhood heroes .

As a kid growing up in the 60s & 70s along wth Stingray and Thunderbirds these daring men and their like become my heroes.
I watched with fascination the films and television programmes documenting their exploits.
I've enjoyed every single syllable of this book and my one complaint would be that it finished too quickly.
The narrator did a fine job and I look forward to the next instalment.
