Summary

Persuaded by his beloved companion to join her in a group tour of Scotland, Qwill expects to revel in his Scottish heritage while keeping Polly Duncan safe from the Pickax Prowler. Instead, his trip is cut short when a thief swipes a suitcase, the bus driver disappears, and a fellow tourist is found dead, all in the same day.

Although the town of Pickax is in a tizzy over the recent events, Qwill has other, more puzzling worries on his mind. Who is the fellow still following Polly? Why is Koko licking Qwill's photographs of Scotland and tackling him on the apple barn stairs? Upon investigating the secret life of the deceased and the bizarre behavior of one of the tour's members, Qwill's sensitive moustache tells him one thing: more trouble is on the way.

Lovely to find these books again

These books are a cut above most cosy mysteries and this one is no exception. The setting may be quaint and whimsical but the motives for crime are the same as you find in more modern mysteries. The narrator has just the right voice to bring the main character to life. Overall very enjoyable. Just a pity that more of these stories are not available on audible.

Bedtime reading

My husband and I have been big fans of the 'Cat who...' murder mystery books for a while. The stories, like Koko and YumYum the siamese, are amusing and George Guidall's soothing narration is at an unhurried, relaxed speed - so these are ideal to unwind to at the end of the day. The murder and suspense are not graphic, so this could make entertaining family listening as children will probably delight in the antics of the two cats.

My only grievance is that there are only three of these books available from Audible UK at the moment and they are quite late in the series. Although every book can stand alone quite well, it is interesting reading the earlier books to find out how Qwill gains his millions, his apple barn and his cats. I highly recommend this title and any other titles narrated by George Guidall (including Crime and Punishment).

Good holiday reading

If you like cats, want a good holiday read, or a change from the usual heavy detective books, the Lilian Jackson Braun series are just the thing. This one particularly demonstrates the joys, or otherwise, of a communal holiday and of small town America, both outside my experience but I feel the books capture what I imagine they would be like.

Recommended that you start with the earliest novel if you haven't read any.
