Summary

Poppy Denby is intrigued when she is invited to attend the auction for the death mask of Nefertiti. Held on the country estate of Sir James Maddox, a famous explorer, the auction promises to be a controversial and newsworthy affair. Representatives from the world's leading museums are gathering to bid on the mask, which was discovered in Egypt.

Poppy quickly sniffs out that the mask was not the only thing found that night: the underground chamber also contained a dead body. Poppy and her colleagues from The Daily Globe, who are trying to stay one step ahead of their rivals from The London Courier, dismiss rumours about the mask's ancient curse. But when one of the auction party is murdered and someone starts stalking Poppy, the race is on to find the killer before the curse can strike again....

outstanding characters

I liked the convoluted plot lines and the continued romance between poppy and Daniel. I also like the way our attention is drawn to the attitudes of the time towards women wanting careers and the choices they have to make. Also attitudes towards disability and the homophobia of the time. this author misses nothing and introduces all these subjects through her characters. these stories are full of action to keep the readers interest and also in finally solving the crime.

A bit of fun

A sort of Christie-period fantasy - lots of useful detail about what Poppy is wearing…. Where would readers be without that? Some lazy anachronisms but hey, who cares with a free book - I doubt if I’d bother buying it. But fun. However, why do readers emphasise the wrong parts? Why SIR James? Do American audiences not realise that it’s just a title and not his name?

another good installment but ...

...how on earth can there be 2 glaring continuity mistakes? Dot's home has always been 137 King's Road but chapter 5 says it's 152. and Winterton Hall was called sonething else in one chapter.

An enjoyable listen

More of what I have come to expect and enjoy from Poppy Denby: an interesting plot, lots of clever historical references and a troubled love life. When I need something easy to listen to these books are just right.

Interesting and exciting

This excellent series just gets better and better. I really enjoyed the Egyptian artefacts storyline. The characters and narration were great as usual.
