About this listen
Millions of people meditate daily. Many believe it affects how we feel and behave. But can we actually change through meditation? Does it work like a pill to alleviate stress? Can it put us on the path to personal transformation?
Psychologists Dr Miguel Farias and Catherine Wikholm explore the human ambition for personal change and its possible illusions, with a focus on yoga and meditation.
They examine the psychological and biological evidence, from early research on transcendental meditation to recent brain-imaging studies on mindfulness. They also include personal accounts from practitioners as well as recounting their own experiences of testing the effects of meditation and yoga on incarcerated criminals.

For mindfulness skeptics
This book is ok until you get to the chapter about religion. I think the authors think they are Historians or experts on religion in that chapter which they are not. And what is the relevance of that chapter anyway?

Interesting blend of science and experience
I found the narrators ‘voices’ for certain people slightly grating, overall though very informative and interesting. Has left me with a decent critical understanding of the topic of meditation. I found the premise to be slightly confused as if they had started with one hypothesis and then broadened it out. However, as a psychologist myself I appreciated the mix of science and spirituality. Perhaps more of the spirituality could have been interesting but I appreciate there are lots of books taking that approach!
