Summary
When Chief Inspector Gamache arrives in picturesque Three Pines, he steps into a village in chaos. A man has been found bludgeoned to death, and there is no sign of a weapon, a motive, or even the dead man's name. As Gamache and his colleagues start to dig under the skin of this peaceful haven for clues, they uncover a trail of stolen treasure, mysterious codes, and a shameful history that begins to shed light on the victim's identity - and points to a terrifying killer....
Look out for: Book 6 in the Chief Inspector Gamache series, Bury Your Dead: As Quebec City shivers in the grip of winter, its ancient stone walls cracking in the cold, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache plunges into the strangest case of his celebrated career. A man has been brutally murdered in one of the city's oldest buildings - a library where the English citizens of Quebec safeguard their history. And the death opens a door into the past, exposing a mystery that has lain dormant for centuries...a mystery Gamache must solve if he's to catch a present-day killer.

Did he - didn’t he?
I had to get over the French accents and that three male characters had surnames beginning with G
But loved the art, the poetry, the quirky characters, the Brutal Telling of what it means to be human.

Hmm
I wasn't sure how many stars to award this because I felt that inspector Gamache behaved uncharacteristically rashly and I don't feel that the story has yet reached its conclusion. I did however enjoy it so 4 stars it is

Still enjoying
It’s difficult to find things to say when listening to one after the other, but maybe that speaks for itself?! This is copied from last review, turning “ditto” into over 15 words!

The Curse of Greed
If you could sum up The Brutal Telling in three words, what would they be?
Greed. Power. Loss.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Brutal Telling?
The mystery of the cobweb.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Adam Sims?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
I wish Adam Sims would check his French accent. Among other errors, he pronounced 'fils' (fiss) as fille (fee). Fille means daughter and fils son, so you appreciate it is rather confusing for the listener!

Best one yet.
I'm listening to the books in order, and this is definitely the best one to date.
An excellent story, familiar characters and beautifully narrated.

Delicious
I’m new to these books. They are proper old fashioned good stories that are well told. There is fact, mystery, legend, history and normal people trying to navigate the consequences of the awful end that someone has just met.

Disappointing
I have listened to all of the previous books and loved them, however this one was lacking. The end felt rushed and just didn't seem to tie everything up - so much just didn't really make sense, and so many question raised but left unanswered. There were also a lot of parts of this that were a bit pointless and just seemed to be there to take up time. A real disappointment compared to the earlier books in the series, but it hasn't put me off listening to the rest of the series. A shame.
