____

In 2011, comedian and podcaster Rosie Wilby was dumped by email... though she did feel a little better about it after correcting her ex’s spelling and punctuation.

Obsessing about breakups ever since, she embarked on a quest to investigate, understand and conquer the psychology of heartbreak.

This book is a love letter to her breakups, a celebration of what they have taught her peppered with anecdotes from illustrious friends and interviews with relationship therapists, scientists and sociologists about separating in the modern age of ghosting, breadcrumbing and conscious uncoupling.

Mixing humour, memoir and science, she attempts to assimilate their advice and ideas in order to not break up with Girlfriend, her partner of nearly three years. Will this self-confessed serial monogamist, and breakup addict, finally settle down?

This book is a wonderful mix of funny, poignant and relatable. Whether you're single, in the process of a breakup or in a long-term relationship - this book speaks to you.

Rosie has the perfect voice for narrating a book - I got lost in her words.

Highly recommend.

Informative, Funny and Entertaining

The Breakup Monologues have been the soundtrack to a recent road-trip I made (beats the radio any day!). I loved the honesty, humour, narrative style, and insight into the science of relationships. Addictive listening, highly recommended!

Read before any breakup. If you can help it!

I wish I'd found this book when I first learned to read, before venturing out in life, age 4+.
Rosie Wilby hits every possible real life Breakup scenario with this superb monologue roadmap.
It’s essentially a guide which takes you through (for example) the death of your first goldfish, to being catfished, ghosted, hung out to dry and wrenched or gently unhooked from your lover, parents, bestie, dream job or favourite food.
To be honest, the ‘lessons’ can be applied to anything. They make sense of the feelings, behaviour and downright unfairness or actual fairness of it all. I giggled and I wanted to cry in places. I chose to ‘read’ on Audible. In two marathon sessions. It was lovely to hear Rosie’s voice. Did I hear and feel her pain (or relief) too? I think so. It felt authentic. Or she’s really good at pretending. Thanks Rosie. I really appreciate The Breakup Monologues, even at age 52. I know where I went wrong or at least who and what went wrong. Or right. And, I shall certainly reference footnotes in my readings going forward. How helpful were yours!

Such a great book!

So refreshing to hear and learn from Rosie's insight, research and experience. Her is narration is wonderful, well-paced and full of meaning. I feel like I've been on a valuable journey listening to her read. Massive kudos for an author to be so authentic, warm and real too - and to have written a book that is very relatable, whatever your perspective on relationships.
A bonus is that it's funny too! Found myself chuckling out loud on many an occasion. Who knew that a book about relationships could be so enjoyable! Really valued the chance to reflect on my own past and present experiences and see the positives within it all too. Thank you Rosie for creating a space with which to do that.
Also - great tips on emptying the dishwasher :)

Wonderfully funny and thought-provoking around our perceptions of break-ups

I listened to this book ahead of our monthly book club for The Single Girls Book Club and found the stories funny, engaging and warming to hear. Many of those tales were familiar, and relatable, and it gave the sense of knowing you were alone in going through these experiences, as lonely and isolating as breakups can feel.
I know our group will love the lessons to be learned from the book and some wisdom and insight in how to learn from the experience of our past break ups and those still to come.

Highly recommended. Great on audible.

Fabulous read (or listen) I should say on audible.

I listened to this in the car whilst driving and there were many laugh out loud AND thought-provoking moments.

Rosie is hilariously funny and comes across as somebody who has an honest grasp of herself.

This was a funny one to listen to via the cars Bluetooth whilst driving in town; a lot of curious faces watching me laughing out loud as I sat at traffic lights.

Highly recommended.

Relatable Content…

I found this audiobook extremely relatable - the discussion of breakups in a queer context and the wider idea of breakups in friendships and work life really spoke to me. Almost deducted a half star for the mention of Carol Dweck but rewarded it again for mention of Stacy Makishi. Really enjoyed listening to this!

Great listening ...

It's always lovely to listen to a book read by the author and Rosie does a great job here. Funny (of course!), uplifting (yes, really) and full of nuggets anyone can take forward with them whatever their relationship situation....
