Summary

She should write it all down in a novel, but even by the standards of the present day, no one would believe it.

Hampshire, England, 1804. Fredericka Swinglehurst, singular, warm and witty, returns home after 11 years in London, determined to lead a quiet life. But fate has other ideas.

When the body of a pregnant woman is found in the grounds of the rectory, Freddy is drawn into a mystery involving murder, slavery, and the theft of a famous diamond.

But who among old friends and new can Freddy trust? And will her heart guide her right or lead her astray?

Intriguing, compelling, historical depth

This novel is a rich tapestry of late Hampshire and London Georgian life with a keen eye to historical detail. The story is intriguing with a wide range of interesting characters leaving you wondering ‘who did it’.
The novel immediately sets you off at a brisk pace and goes headfirst into an unusual murder. The main characters are compelling and by the end you feel you know them extremely well.
The novel also touches on social issues of the day, some of which are still current.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to someone who enjoys a great plot and historical accuracy.
