About this listen
The 9-L model illustrated in Blended and Special explores the dynamics of stepfamilies caring for children with special needs and disabilities and presents the information in digestible nuggets ready for consumption by blended families juggling the demands of parenthood with caring for children with special needs. Having grown up in a blended family with a sibling with special needs and now being a stepparent with a child with special educational needs, the author has experienced the phenomenon from different angles. As an active member of the special needs and disabilities community, the author was also able to draw data from fellow parents of children with special needs to supplement the information. Whether you have an established stepfamily or are in the early stages of a blended family, you can find value in the information presented. Also included is a chapter of real-life case studies from stepparents caring for disabled children. The experiences they share hold valuable lessons on issues that may arise and how they handled them in their endeavor to maintain a happy stepfamily.
There are various reasons why the union of two parents and their children from former relationships can prove challenging. Blended families face unique challenges, and when a child with special needs is part of the family unit, the learning curve can be very steep. Unsuspecting partners might discover that they are out of their depth in the circumstances. If not understood before moving in, the stepparent may struggle to cope and throw the family off balance. The text provides valuable tips and techniques for raising stepchildren with special needs and disabilities. It is written solely from the perspective of a parent who has been on both sides of the equation and holds no medical or technical advice or information.

Informative and relatable
As a father in a blended family, I found this book highly beneficial.
Although we don't deal with specific learning disabilities, the book really opened my eyes to how many different types of family situations there are. The author's life experiences, combined with great coping techniques and enjoyable narration, make this a great listen.

Awesome!
I got this book for my brother and his family since he's recently married with a blended family. He really enjoyed it! He thought there was really good insight on building relationships with his stepchildren, which he was struggling with because he really wanted to have a good relationship. Highly recommend for anyone having a similar experience!

A great book for blended families
Parenting step children and managing blended families are quite the tasks for sure. The author does a great job talking about how to parent a step child with special needs. I loved the chapter where she talks about how you have a child with a disability but that label is not the child’s identity or an excuse to enable poor behavior. She emphasizes listening intently with eye contact, showing respect, compassion, and love are instrumental ingredients that will foster bonding. The author also talks about laughing and playing together. I would dare say praying together as well. It is a wonderful book that sees the children in a blended family not as "his children and her children" but as one family. I highly recommend this to all brave enough to say, "I do" again!!

Inspiring and informative
As someone who works closely with children with various types of disabilities and special needs, I witness how challenging it can be to be there (at our best) as a parent, and even more so as a step-parent.
I've found this listen quite inspirational, providing assurance and guidance to tackle this often challenging situation. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect of positive coping strategies and advice, which made it easy to follow and understand. Being well-equiped with appropriate tools and knowledge is key to success, as well as looking after our own well-being as parents and carers, so I believe that this is an important book to keep at hand if you find yourself in this situation.

Jam Packed!
A really great audiobook for anyone caring for a child with special needs, whether you are finding it challenging or not. It can often be extremely testing and some of the easy to understands tips throughout this book I can really see would be a life saver. The case studies presented in the book make it much easier to grasp the concept and also understand you are not alone. 5* couldn't fault it!

Uplifting and informative!
I've witnessed how hard it can be to manage children with special needs. With this book, it will certainly help families cope with the challenges of such situation. The stories provided by the author are also eye-opening. It makes us more patient, and understanding when it comes to dealing with blended family members. I was also impressed with the 9-L model provided by the author as it was very informative but very understandable as well. A great book that I would highly recommend!

It was very informative. Thank you!
There are a lot of things that I wouldn't have ever considered before. In my opinion, couples go into a second relationship without even thinking about the kids. Without even knowing what is in store for them. Thank you for sharing this!
