About this listen
Rosa, a disillusioned revolutionary; Karla, an unhappily married social worker; and adopted brother Lenny who is back on drugs again. In the course of battling their own demons and each other, every member of the family is called upon to decide what - if anything - they still believe in.

Absorbing story
This is the sort of story which draws the reader in. I found myself steadily becoming addicted, 'I'll just finish this, then listen to another half hour', a sign of a good story. The narrator was wonderful to listen to, with faultless accents. My 14 year old daughter, who is very well read, was similarly entranced. I would really like to download more Zoe Heller titles.

Good story, awful voice.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The voice reading it. She simply couldn't do the accents.
Would you recommend The Believers to your friends? Why or why not?
Probably not, a bit of a waste of time.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She couldn't do the accents. All the voices were annoying.
Could you see The Believers being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
No.

An embarrassing family story
What made the experience of listening to The Believers the most enjoyable?
It's a round family story set in New York with several layers on faith, politics, loneliness and other engagements. The style is quite delightful, sometimes cynical, clever post-grad, sometimes mad and cool. One of my favourite audiobooks ever.
What other book might you compare The Believers to, and why?
It's a very pity Audible doesn't make the audio version of other works by Zoe Heller ('Notes On A Scandal' and 'Something To Tell'). Well, The Believers compares only to them, Mrs. Heller is absolutely UNIQUE.
Which character – as performed by Tara Ward – was your favourite?
Mrs. Ward is a woman with a thousand voices, she's a proper entertainer. She sings, she dances, she raps, giving life with elegance to each of the characters. A best choice to a best book!
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This is a well-structured, wity and hilarious novel. It's mostly wicked, made me laugh with amusement. And most of all, it made me wishing never to end, but Mrs. Heller writes tipically short novels...
Any additional comments?
Warning! Audible didn't cut the book along chapters, I suppose they only paste together the audio discs. Good move! When I forgot it and wanted to skip to a chapter, I found myself in the middle of a half-an-hour-earlier paragraph, which was a very annoying experience. What does it costs to sectionate your books properly, dear Audible?
