Summary
THE ALL-TIME NUMBER ONE AUSTRALIAN BEST SELLER
This is the only money guide you'll ever need.
That's a bold claim, given there are thousands of finance books on the shelves.
Yet there’s a reason this book is in one in every 20 Australian homes.
You’ll find out how to create an entire financial plan that is so simple you can sketch it on the back of a serviette...and you'll be able to manage your money in 10 minutes a week.
The Barefoot Steps stand the test of time. In this classic edition, you’ll get the skinny on:
- Saving up a six-figure house deposit in 20 months
- Doubling your income using the 'Trapeze Strategy'
- Saving $77,641 on your mortgage and wiping out almost seven years of payments
- Handing your kids (or grandkids) a $140,000 cheque on their 21st birthday
- Why you don't need $1 million to retire...with the 'Donald Bradman Retirement Strategy'
Sound too good to be true? It's not.
This book is full of stories from everyday Aussies — single people, young families, empty nesters, retirees — who have applied the Barefoot Steps, freed themselves from crippling debt and achieved amazing, life-changing results.
And you're next.
Scott Pape is the Barefoot Investor.
Since 2002, he’s reached millions of Australians through his email newsletter, national weekend newspaper columns, appearances on TV and radio and his bestselling books, The Barefoot Investor (2016) and The Barefoot Investor for Families (2018).
He has worked with the heads of government, schools across the country, AFL and NRL teams, bushfire survivors, and some of the most vulnerable people in our community.
In 2020, Scott was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for ‘service to the community and to financial education’.
Scott gave up his financial services license in 2020 to become a volunteer financial counsellor.
He lives in country Victoria with his wife, Liz, and their four children on their family
farm and is often seen belting around in an old ute that doesn’t need to be locked.

Editor reviews
Whether you’re looking to save up enough money to put down a deposit on a house or find a financial adviser who’s actually trustworthy, it’s safe to say that achieving financial objectives can feel like an insurmountable challenge. But with the guidance of Scott Pape, The Barefoot Investor himself, your most ambitious money goals can become a reality.
This guide isn’t filled with unachievable budget demands or plans that are impossible to actually put into action. Rather, Pape distils his most pragmatic money advice into five easy-to-follow steps. Recently updated for 2020, it offers the most up-to-date information on who to call, where to invest and what to say to achieve financial freedom once and for all. As he’s known for his work on radio and television, it’s no surprise that Pape is a masterful storyteller and narrator — his rich, warm voice brings to life stories from real life, demonstrating the changes in money habits needed to grow and sustain wealth.

I'm going to get this book for all my family
Amazing book with lots of practical tips. Written for Australians however as long as you know Super=pension and bank fees don't really apply in the uk the advise is all still valid. I highly recommend this book.

Definitely aimed at the Aussie market
Really enjoyable read/listen. Scott tells it like it is, and pulls few punches. The material is Aussicentric talking directly about Super (superannuation) however all of the structures & philosophy can easily be rolled out worldwide. A low tech approach to securing yourself and those you care about financially. And yes, your plan can be written on a napkin. Keep it simple stupid! I recommend having a listen.

I think this could be great advice, if it works, it sounds simple but affective. I'm going to give it ago.

I love it
I don't live in Australia but I listen to Scott's two books on repeat. I'm very slow on the uptake when it comes to money and numbers but I'm determined to get this right and step by step I can see it happening and I can feel the stress melting away. All my people are getting these books for Xmas.

Finance and the ordinary person
Reading Scott's this book you get a sense of almost befriending the author and becoming part of a community. In this way, I recommend Scott's book, you get a sense of a person who understands finance abut is also keenly aware that most people do not share his financial literacy skills. Through providing plenty of sensible examples the book even for the most critical of readers will provide fodder for their money management, if nothing else you'll know what and where to look for some of the information just to see where you're getting screwed over. That alone is fantastic value in and of itself. Certainly, this is very much geared to Australia but at least he works to an example he knows well and true. If he did further works with other international examples, say the USA and Ireland, I would certainly buy it.
