Summary

In the space of a few months, across Asia, a miracle became a nightmare. This was the Asian financial crisis of 1995-98.

In this economic crisis, hundreds of people died in rioting, political strongmen were removed, and hundreds of billions of dollars were lost by investors.

This crisis saw the US dollar value of some Asian stock markets decline by 90 percent. Why did almost no one see it coming?

The Asian Financial Crisis 1995–98 charts Russell Napier’s personal journey during that crisis as he wrote daily for institutional investors about an increasingly uncertain future. Relying on contemporaneous commentary, it charts the mistakes and successes of investors in the battle for investment survival in Asia from 1995-98.

This is not just a guide for investors navigating financial markets, but also an explanation of how this crisis created the foundations of an age of debt that has changed the modern world.

Still relevant in 2024

Well explained walk through the Asian financial crisis of the 90s. The author explains how the improvised “solution” has led to a global debt overhang with concerning implications for the world economy.

My Ode to a genuine inspiration. I owe him much

" If you own Stocks Bonds or any type of Financial asset and do not know this man's name , I'm embarrassed on your behalf while also taking great satisfaction on being the anonymous soul that brings his presence to your attention. His depth of character is only surpassed by his ability to strip down markets to their naked shameless truism's " Roy Mahady

Good, but not great

I'm writing this as a huge fan of Mr Napier's work. The main reason I didn't 5 star this book is that I had expected to learn more from this book. It's a good chronicling of the Asian Financial Crisis and how we ended up in the mess we are currently in, but I would have appreciated more of Russell's personal input.
