About this listen

First published in 1884, Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is among the first novels in American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English. Some have called it the first Great American Novel, and the book has become required reading in many schools throughout the United States.

The story is set along the Mississippi River in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Arkansas around 1840. It depicts the development of Huckleberry (Huck) Finn, a boy about thirteen years old. Huck has to find a way between his belief in the right thing to do and what most do believe to be wrong.

Sprints to Life on P1 and Never Stops to the Final Page: clever

A rollicking good adventure, like they don’t hardly make no more. Beautifully plotted, paced and presented, loved every minute. You do need a high tolerance of the N word and there’s certainly something to be said about the in-grained attitudes of church, class, race. But I only read this because I plan to read Percival Everett’s latest book: “James”. So, (A) that’s one favour Everett - and Mark Twain - have already done me (B) I’m leaving any further ethical commentary to Everett’s book.

BLOODY HILARIOUS NOT JUST FOR BOYS

This book made me really laugh out loud until I was crying! When I was a kid this was a boys book and I never discovered how brilliant Mark Twain was on so many levels. Political commentator, Socialist, comic. He is all of those things. The narrator was also brilliant.

Great story, well read

I love Mark Twain’s turn of phrase and use of irony. He brings the story and characters to life. The narrator did a fantastic job! I had to stop listening to the free version on Audible read by Elijah Wood, he tries to do it well but struggles with the accent so much it’s unconvincing and irritating.
