About this listen

Peggy Bowden has not had an easy life. As a teenager, her mother was committed to an asylum, and then a local priest forced her into an abusive marriage. But when her husband dies in an accident, Peggy sees an opportunity to start again and trains as a midwife.

In 1950s Dublin it is not easy for a woman to make a living, and Peggy sees a chance to start a business, and soon a lucrative maternity home is up and running. But when Peggy realizes that the lack of birth control is an issue for women, she uses their plight as a way to make more money. Very soon Peggy is on the wrong side of the law.

What makes a woman decide to walk down a dark path? Can Peggy ever get back on the straight and narrow? Or will she have to pay for her crimes?

Mostly good

This was a great story with a fantastic narrator but it was somewhat ruined with a weak ending

Peggy’s strength

I really enjoyed this story. It was told well by Aoife McMahon. It would be a great series.

The Abandoned - Will Not Disappoint

I am amazed at how Audible actively promote some books and suck us into buying them, only to be severely disappointed. I have fallen for this a few times but no more.

Anyway, the reason I am saying this is because there are wonderful books out there that fall under the radar and The Abandoned is one of them. This is a marvellous story and is well narrated; Aoife McMahon is a bit of a star in my opinion. Sharon Thompson is a talented and insightful writer. The story covers a lot of aspects, including Irish life in the 50s and the vagaries of human nature.

Looking forward to her next book being released on Amazon.

Brilliant narrator

Not my favourite book. I found the story disjointed. I love listening to Aoife McMahon otherwise I may have ditched it.

Bleak

This is bleak and harsh throughout. I didn’t feel any sympathy for the character despite what happened and am not quite sure what the author was aiming for. Aiofe McMahon was a good narrator as usual and the sole reason that I stuck it out to the bitter end.

Excruciating!

Clichéd and the narration awful - kept hoping it would improve, but just couldn’t get past the 5th chapter.
