Summary
A pretty young girl has to leave home to make money for her family. She is clever and a good worker; but she is uneducated and does not know the cruel ways of the world. just the right length!
Reading this for our book club but didn't fancy this rather cheerless story unabridged so this was just right length and read well. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Shaggy dog ending
The narration was excellent and I'm glad I listened to the abridged story because it was such a desperate story. Poor Tess. It's the kind of story that makes you depressed.
