THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER FROM THE PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING, BOOKER-SHORTLISTED AUTHOR

It’s autumn in Maine, and the town lawyer Bob Burgess has become enmeshed in an unfolding murder investigation, defending a lonely, isolated man accused of killing his mother. He has also fallen into a deep and abiding friendship with the acclaimed writer, Lucy Barton, who lives nearby in a house next to the sea. Together, Lucy and Bob talk about their lives, their hopes and regrets, and what might have been.

Lucy, meanwhile, befriends one of Crosby’s longest inhabitants, Olive Kitteridge, now living in a retirement community on the edge of town. They spend afternoons together in Olive’s apartment, telling each other stories. Stories about people they have known – “unrecorded lives,” Olive calls them – reanimating them, and, in the process, imbuing their lives with meaning.

Brimming with empathy and pathos, TELL ME EVERYTHING is Elizabeth Strout operating at the height of her powers, illuminating the ways in which our relationships keep us afloat. As Lucy says, “Love comes in so many different forms, but it is always love.”

Broken people

Patricide, matricide, suicide, lies, deceit, dysfunctional families, bodily functions, old age, dementia and marking pants - all human life is here. Typical Strout style read by the ever brilliant Kimberly Farr.

Engaging characters in a story which is complex but not too complicated to follow.

Elizabeth Stroud’s writing allows us to empathise with all of these complex people and their difficult stories and engage with their individual stories whilst constantly wanting to know what happens next for Lucy and Bob.

Utterly Wonderful

Another beautifully crafted story from the incredible Elizabeth Strout. If you love Elizabeth's writing - as I do - then you'll adore this. All the very real people inhabiting the pages of Tell Me Everything, that I've come to know and love over the years, are brought back to life - Bob and Lucy in particular, but most of all Olive. And now Matt's in there too, a lovely addition to the town. No one writes like Ms Strout. Perfect.

Wonderful book beautifully narrated.

Elizabeth Strout’s best book in the Lucy Barton series. I just love how she brings these characters to life and draws you into their world.

Fitting conclusion to Strout’s novels about Olive Kitteridge and Lucy Barton

Beautifully written novel, which develops the relationship between Lucy and Olive, and Lucy and Bob Burgess with skill, pathos and humour. A gifted story-teller, the writer is always perceptive, and one can always relate to the ups and downs of the long-term relationships that she depicts. Allowing Lucy to have the last word about Bob through her final story to Olive is the perfect ending, as are her remarks about love. I highly recommend this book, which is also very well read: while it is extremely moving, it is also very funny in parts. I shall miss these characters, though their story is now told.

Beautiful story, beautifully read.

I loved this story. so engrossing as it meanders through "untold stories". It explores those questions that absorb us all as we get older. Sad, but uplifting.

Fantasy narration

Intertwining stories that all linked to a central theme. Love the character details that evoke personality. Also the backdrop of the seasons described in wonderful detail.
