About this listen

Lives depend on two women when a train derails high in the remote Alps, but an unforgiving mountain, avalanches, crevasses, and other perils stand between them and safety. Associated Press reporter Hudson Mead is an extreme skiing enthusiast who has covered war zones and natural disasters during her long and distinguished career, but nothing could have prepared her for the challenges she'll face when the snow train she's riding is decimated by a massive avalanche.

Librarian Steffi Graham, on her first trip abroad, is anxious to hone her rock-climbing skills in a new and unfamiliar terrain of ice and snow. She gets much more than she bargained for when her talents put her on the team that goes for help. As the two strangers struggle to reach civilization, they must compromise and learn to trust each other, a task that may be nearly as difficult as the journey itself.

addictive listen

I listened to this overnight instead of sleeping, and I'm finding it hard to rate the story. On the romance side, scores average, but in terms of a gripping survival, disaster tale, it's pretty good. The novel starts slow, setting the stage and the introducing the main characters. Kim spends a lot of time introducing and developing a number of characters each with unique personalities and backgrounds, as the story progresses.

The main f/f romance focuses on Hudson (self-sufficient international journalist) and Steffi (Librarian and hobbyist cliff climber). To me, the romance is a small part of the story, with the majority of this in the last couple of chapters. It reads more as a survival adventure. I did enjoy it, because I like stories which involve many characters and seeing them interact in an affirming way. But also the author did a great job of maintaining suspense and interest as the victims try to survive.

Despite the environment and challenges in which it was set, I did feel the romance and conflicts of the romantic leads could have been more dramatically played out. For example the trust thing could have resulted in many arguments, or incidents. I also was disappointed that Steffi was not the one to signal the helicopter at the last minute.

In terms of the narration, I did find this hard to follow. I don't know if it was my settings or the Coleen Marlo. But she spoke very fast, and I could not slow this down with the speed settings. So I don't know if this is an issue with the posted audio rather than the narration. So please check the sample before you buy. That been said she does a great job of handling all the different nationalities involved.

In the end it’s an enjoyable read, but perhaps more as a disaster/survival adventure then a pure romance.

Great story.

This is a fantastic rollercoaster of an adventure that kept me wanting more and more and held me in the edge of my seat. The narrator brought it all together expertly and effortlessly and the characters came to life in an enthralling storyline.
I definitely recommend this audio book.❤

Wow, nail biting and beautifully written

I really enjoyed this book. The first one from this author for me and not the last. The story is fab from the start with a great story line and a brutal disaster that will keep you urging the characters on.

Highly recommended and a great performance by the narrator.

Predictable, average, not the worst I've but not the best.

It's always a gamble when choosing a book, this is one I had for ages but couldn't really get into it, eventually I was left with little choice so embarked with hope....didn't take long to find it very average, very similar to other formulaic books that to my amazement and disappointment get published. I've read some fantastic books and some dire, this falls in between, not being of much substance, and soon becomes predictable.
The story isn't very plausible, though it makes one wonder how the same story would be written in the hands of Waterman, or Zimmer..to name a couple..., could they have made it believable, gripping, tense and less obvious about thr outcome?
We'll never know. So if you want something that won't rock your world and is easy going, this is just such a book.
If like me you keep your favourites for another read, this isn't one of those.
As the outcome is so very predictable, if you've been enjoying it, the end doesn't disappoint...it's as expected which I suppose makes the ending satisfying if you care.
As I said, not the best, but not the worst. Average.
