Summary

When you're dreaming, it's dangerous to wake up.... An addictive psychological thriller from David Mark, currently writing "at the top of his game" (Publishers Weekly).

Liz Zahavi is desperate. Desperate for her controlling partner, Jay, to stay with her, to actually love her. Desperate to be well again, after a recent diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Desperate to be understood.

Private therapy seems like the answer to her prayers, but Liz doesn't even make it to her first appointment. Lost in a maze of country roads, she crashes her car, only to be rescued by a brooding local farmer...who just keeps on rescuing her. Attractive and intense, Jude is a dream, and Liz doesn't want to wake up.

But four years ago, Jude's perfect, pretty wife died alone in the woods near their house. And as Jude's past boils into the present, threatening to destroy their new happiness, Liz begins to wonder what exactly her new man is capable of...and how far he's willing to go.

main character so annoying

this is a story about a woman that has a few issues. whilst the writing portrayed her condition pretty well I found all the back and forth going on in her thoughts so tiresome. I don't understand how some of the other reviews gave a 5 and that it was brilliant... the story was predictable and I would not categorise as a psychological thriller! I just found myself checking how much longer until the end.

Oh WOW! What a find!

I really REALLY loved this and listened to it non stop for two days. Wonderful, poetic writing. sometimes funny, sometimes whimsical, endlessly vivid in its narrative with an underlying menace which just winds you into the story. With a touch of Wuthering Heights meets Happy Valley dipped in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, this is one not to be missed. Bravo DM, what a talent, and great choice of narrator.

Liked it v much, I’d like more from the author

I compulsively listen to the ‘unlimited’ audiobooks on here, had this one on my mental list for a while but avoided it because the main character has Borderline Personality disorder. As do I.
I’ve listened to a number of books which have just been rubbish and miserable w/ regards to BPD.
Well this one was excellent w regards to mental illness. It was enjoyably sinister too. But it’s not a stellar work of literature. I would like for the author to shoot for more!

If you read this Marks: you have it! You’re talented, do some literature!

sublime descriptions

more a poet than a novelist. beautiful observations, descriptions and metaphors, often humorous. not an amazing story but sewn together with a golden thread of words.

Brilliant

This is one of the best books I have listened to, rich characters and excellent portrayal of mental health issues.

an usual story

I warmed to the characters and enjoyed the plot and its twists but for me, it was totally spoilt by the narration. The accent for Betsy did not match her profile and the baddie sounded like Queen Elizabeth I from Horrible Histories. This made the drama of the climactic scene more laughable than ominous, and for me spoilt what was a great ending.
A great story though, so I'm glad I made it to the end.
