About this listen
In Superyacht Captain, a professional at the zenith of the world's most lavish and exclusive industry gives a rare insight into a career that is entertaining, instructive and at times daunting in its scale.
The tale of an ordinary boy whose career takes him on a most extraordinary journey, this audiobook begins with Brendan messing about in boats in a sleepy coastal Australian town, and ends with him becoming one of the most successful and respected superyacht captains in the World—the consummate 'Billionaire's Captain'. Spanning two decades and circling the globe, his story intimately draws listeners into the real world of superyachts, their crew and their owners. It is Brendan's love letter to an industry he respects and holds so dear to his heart.
It's the story of stepping out and embracing uncertainty—failing, learning and repeating—weaving in in the lessons he's learned as he's progressed from deck hand to captain, Brendan's insights are valuable for anyone leading teams with demanding objectives. Surprisingly humble and self aware, in a world of glitter and extravagance you can see why he's trusted. All of this is told against a backdrop of seemingly impossible glamour at the most extravagant edge of the global wealth spectrum, with plenty of entertaining stories of the superyacht lifestyle.
A brilliant story for all, for the superyacht fans, as well as anyone interested in leadership and management techniques from someone at the top of their game, working for those who define the rules of the game.

Respectful gawping at the super-rich
I was prompted to read this by an article in the “New Yorker” that I read last summer on holiday in Antibes on the French Riviera, home to some ridiculous superyachts. The article gawped at the super rich and their behaviour; this book is more respectful of the billionaire yacht-owners and their families but still reveals some of the juicy details of what their life is like (my primary purpose for reading it).
The author, Brendan O’Shannassy, is an Australian who trained in the navy and had various maritime-related jobs before he got into yachting. He takes his captaincy very seriously and professionally. The books feels like a result of his regular self-reflection and personal development. At times it’s a bit stilted with self-help business lessons. It’s at its best when retelling stories of what happens in the yachting life, the procedures, protocols, hierarchies, pressures, and what it’s really like to spend time with billionaires.
The narrator of this audiobook version, Nathan Lang, appropriately has an Australian accent and conveys the slightly boring, self-important tone of the author. But it’s still an engaging book that I whizzed through in three days.

Promised more than it delivered
I was looking forward to this book and made it to the end without difficulty. However, it didn't quite live up to my expectations.
It was a bit light on the sights, sounds and smells of the locations. The author / captain dwelt excessively in some areas and then glossed over others that seemed equally worthy.
No issues with the narration.
