A few key insights from chapter one:
1. The theory of empiricism states that all knowledge is gained through sensory experience. However, appearances can be deceiving. We tend to make judgments about the world around us, not realizing how flawed our perceptions actually are. Thus, empiricism is misleading.
2. The truth is that the knowledge we gain throughout our lives doesn’t rely solely on experience. After all, we are constantly forming theories and making assertions about realities that exist far beyond our perception and about the laws that govern those realities.
3. Where then does our knowledge come from, if not from experience? Well, our theories are essentially conjectures - mere guesses and speculations about the world around us. Knowledge, on the other hand, results from theories that have been criticized, rearranged, merged, and modified with the purpose of refining them.
4. Discovering a new explanation is essentially an act of creativity.
