Summary
I'm the fat Puerto Rican - Polish girl who doesn't feel like she belongs in her skin, or anywhere else for that matter. I've always been too much and yet not enough.
Sugar Legowski-Gracia wasn't always fat, but fat is what she is now at age seventeen. Not as fat as her mama, who is so big she hasn't gotten out of bed in months. Not as heavy as her brother, Skunk, who has more meanness in him than fat, which is saying something. But she's large enough to be the object of ridicule wherever she is: at the grocery store, walking down the street, at school. Sugar's life is dictated by taking care of Mama in their run-down home - cooking, shopping, and, well, eating. A lot of eating, which Sugar hates as much as she loves.
When Sugar meets Even (not Evan - his nearly illiterate father misspelled his name on the birth certificate), she has the new experience of someone seeing her and not her body. As their unlikely friendship builds, Sugar allows herself to think about the future for the first time, a future not weighed down by her body or her mother.
Soon Sugar will have to decide whether to become the girl that Even helps her see within herself or to sink into the darkness of the skin-deep role her family and her life have created for her.

Bullies in all shapes and sizes
I really enjoyed this book it was much deeper than I expected, Mercy (Aka Sugar) mainly aimed at her because of her love of all things sweet and for her size. She is growing up in a toxic household her ungrateful Mother who is so huge she is bed bound and Sugar is trying to juggle school as well as looking after a mother who continuously tells her she is fat and no good. The whole family are huge and she has a brother nicknamed skunk who just as viscous as her mother and one brother who has moved out who finds love and he eventually helps Sugar towards the end of book in ways she never ever imagined.
On top of that Sugar is the subject of ridicule at school due to her size then one day she bumps into a guy at school named Even it should have been Evan but tragic circumstances in his family meant his mother dying giving birth to him and his twin died at the same time. Sadly his mother’s twin suffered the same fete.
This meant Even growing up with a father unable to handle his grief and he was being used as a punchbag. The difference is on the surface Sugar is the fat girl who is the subject of ridicule but Even is good looking slim and no one can believe they could be friends.
Even is the light Sugar is missing in her life, Sugar completes Even. As time goes on Even teaches Sugar to ride his Harley that he over time worked to restore with the skills he learned by working part time in a car maintenance place in his spare time and he opens up her mind to the fact she is beautiful and he makes her see that her eating habits are to do with the pain she experiences every time her mum and brother mistreat her. Even does it in a caring way then suddenly Sugar is walking and starts to lose weight and her confidence starts to improve. Sugar discovers real happiness and at all times Even is respectful and kind to her.
One day Even fails to show up then tragedy strikes and Sugar finally comes into her own.
